CURADORIA DE MARCO BENE INAUGURAÇÃO: DOMINGO, 17 DE DEZEMBRO, ÀS 17H DE 17 DE DEZEMBRO A 17 DE FEVEREIRO DE 2018 ENTRADA LIVRE Desde 1991, conhecedores de arte, críticos, o público, etc., têm esperado pacientemente que Jerry – o rato – apareça de dentro de um buraco na parede. A razão de tão persistente expectativa reside nos truques do artista espanhol Juan Muñoz (Madrid, 1953 – Ibiza, 2001), que, como presente para a sua filha Lucia, elaborou um arguto comentário ao “crescente número de quartos escuros” nas instituições de arte, por intermédio da instalação Waiting for Jerry (1991). A peça – composta meramente por um buraco na parede, uma luz dentro dessa cavidade e sons reminiscentes da série de bonecos animados Tom&Jerry – faz referência ao que não está presente, à possibilidade de um ponto de fuga, de uma rota de escape para uma identidade fictícia. Foi, segundo Muñoz, o amor incondicional de Lucia a Jerry aquilo que impulsionou esta peça – a reconstrução de uma zona segura na qual ele possa descansar em paz dos contínuos ataques de Tom, um espaço no qual possa desaparecer. Na série Tom & Jerry não há diálogo, tudo converge em acção pura e constante. Porquanto dura o suspense, o espectador tende a imaginar que Jerry conseguirá escapulir-se. No entanto, ele nunca chega a estar seguro. Se tal acontecesse, a narrativa terminaria por completo. Contudo, em Waiting for Jerry é o oposto que tem lugar. Esta instalação de Muñoz está, implicitamente, a informar o espectador de que a história terminou. O entretanto é o que agora está em questão. Na verdade, a peça Ilustra um dos impulsos mais enigmáticos de Muñoz: o seu interesse por um espaço de empreendimento criativo, um espaço de introspecção onde, como o próprio disse, ''a acção tem lugar nas muitas horas em que nada sucede. Portanto, se há aqui um tema, ele é exactamente essa experiência.'' 2 Este trabalho ''trata de um homem numa sala, à espera de nada.'' A questão que se põe, portanto, é a seguinte: será possível vermos uma peça e ser esse olhar, e não o objecto que é visto, aquilo que é relevante neste acto criativo? Pode este nada ser nossa exposição ou deveríamos esperar um pouco mais? _ Since 1991 art connoisseurs, critics and the public have patiently been waiting for Jerry – the mouse – to appear from within a hole in the wall. The reason for such persistent expectancy lies in the tricks of Spanish artist Juan Muñoz (Madrid, 1953 – Ibiza, 2001), who, as a gift for his daughter Lucia, elaborated a witty comment on “the increasing number of darkrooms within” art institutions, through an installation: Waiting for Jerry (1991). The piece; merely a hole in the wall, a light from within the hole, and sounds reminiscent of Tom and Jerry, hints at what is not present, a vanishing point, an escape route for a fictitious identity. Muñoz mentioned that it was Lucia’s unconditional love for Jerry what prompted the piece to emerge, rebuilding Jerry’s safe zone for him to rest in piece from the never-ending attacks of Tom, creating a space for him to disappear. In Tom&Jerry there’s no dialogue, pure action is constantly taking place. Throughout the uninterrupted suspense of the story, one is always inclined to prospect Jerry’s final escape. However, Jerry never reaches safety, if he did, the narrative would end altogether. Yet, in Waiting for Jerry the opposite is taking place. Muñoz’s installation is implicitly telling the viewer that the story has ended; the ‘meanwhile’ is now what’s at stake. It illustrates one of Muñoz’s most enigmatic urgings, his concern with a space of creative undertaking, a space of introspection where, as he stated, “the action takes place in the many hours where nothing happens. So, if there ever was a subject, it’s exactly that experience.” 1 His work “is about a man in a room, waiting for nothing.” Hence, can we look at a piece and be the gaze, not the work, what is relevant and part of the creative act?
