Know Your News: Media Literacy Workshop with Dimana Doneva

There is a good reason why the Oxford Dictionaries’ Word of the Year for 2016 is post-truth – an adjective defined as ‘relating to or denoting circumstances in which objective facts are less influential in shaping public opinion than appeals to emotion and personal belief’.
A word that has existed for nearly a decade, “post-truth” has recently seen a spike in popularity following events like Brexit and the U.S. Presidential Election. Nowadays — maybe even more than at any other point in history — fake news plays a decisive role in the development of global happenings.
In the era of Internet everyone is able to create and share information. However, does it mean that everybody has become a reporter, or that nobody is a reporter anymore? Join us for a media literacy workshop at Associação Mais Cidadania on June 3 to discuss the origins and causes of fake news and the ways in which we can detect them.
The workshop will be led in English by Dimana Doneva, currently an EVS volunteer at Mais Cidadania and a journalist with experience in radio, TV and online media back in her home country Bulgaria.
We will investigate the link between Donald Trump’s election, and a bunch of tech-savvy teens in a small Macedonian town. Also we will find out whether Angela Merkel’s hair was censured on a Saudi TV channel and how users were tricked into throwing their brand new iPhones in water. Quizzes, games and a simulation are all part of the program!
