Performance of Makers Collective (UK, London)
Góis
8th of September, 2016
2pm -9.30 pm

Makers' Collective brings together ten diverse artists based in London to create new work inspired by each other and the beautiful surroundings of Góis as a part of RAIZVANGUARDA Artist in Residency program.

Drawing on their backgrounds in visual arts, theatre and music, they will collaborate over the course of their residency at RAIZVANGUARDA in what will be an inter-disciplinary exploration based on the theme of eco-systems and interconnectivity.

Makers Collective is a musicians and artists collective devoted to the creation of new music/art that is specific to the place, people and time where it exists. It is about making and playing, discussing and sharing in a collaborative and creative environment. During this residency week we will share skills and get inspiration from each other and the surroundings. We will experiment and create bonds, music and art. We will have space for personal investigation but focus on collective making. We will curate, devise and perform/share as a whole group with space for small group and individual work as well.

Our group work will be centered on the theme of eco-systems, understood both as a concept inspired by nature, as well as a tool for exploring collaborative social dynamics. Loosely contextualized by the work of such authors as Borgo, Frederic Laloux, Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, etc., and the theoretical frameworks of cybernetics, free improv, and management theory, etc., we hope to explore ways of working that optimize group cohesion as well as individual realization.

Our goal is to engender a space that recognizes and nurtures the artist as an individual and member of the collective via equal emphasis on creativity, connection, and balance.

The residency will be structured around two main activities: skill-sharing and group work. Group work will be aimed at creating a piece of work by the end of the week, to be shared with the local community.

The Makers Collective is interested in combating the isolation, splintering, and distraction of the artistic community that we are part of in London. We see interdisciplinary-arts collaboration as an essential method for promoting innovation and creativity. We therefore hold the creation of community as essential to nurturing realized artists. At the core of successful new collaborations stand centered, present individuals.

At heart, we believe in the power of the “village” to provide a supportive network from which grows not only new artistic initiatives, but also valuable emotional connections which can cut across the clutter and pressures of the freelance existence. Residencies are one part of our strategy to establish spaces, times, and opportunities for artists to connect to one another, to reaffirm their values and goals, and support one another’s careers.

We are eager to find ways to share our process, practices, and our work with more Portuguese arts organizations and to explore the effect of such cultural cross-pollination on our creative process.
