[for English please scroll down] Loretta Fahrenholz Circle Navel Nil 24.04. – 27.06.2021 Na sua primeira exposição individual em Portugal, a decorrer no espaço Lumiar Cité, a artista plástica e cineasta Loretta Fahrenholz apresenta a estreia do último vídeo, produzido em colaboração com K8 Howl e Jak Ritger (TRLLM) para um concerto da artista e compositora norte-americana Kim Gordon (Sonic Youth, Body/Head). O vídeo mostra uma colagem de cenas de rua rodadas em diversos estados norte-americanos, tornando-se no cenário de fundo para uma série de fotografias captadas durante a sua residência artística organizada pela Maumaus no verão de 2020. As imagens do ecrã plasma que apresenta o vídeo e as fotografias de médio e grande formato fundem-se numa instalação cujo impacto se manifesta tanto no interior como no exterior da galeria. As fotografias são criadas a partir de uma técnica que Fahrenholz tem vindo a desenvolver no seu trabalho, fragmentando os motivos, neste caso um grupo de mulheres jovens, até ao extremo do irreconhecível. Aliada ao título da exposição, esta desconstrução faz referência a aspetos da história da arte e às rápidas mudanças nas condições sociais nas duas primeiras décadas do século XX. O próprio título é inspirado no poema “Hell's Wisdom” da artista dadaísta Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven que, à semelhança da pintura de vanguarda, explorou a fragmentação, a alteração da perspetiva e a dissolução corpórea nos seus textos. O poder das fotografias de Fahrenholz reside na combinação de motivos semi-abstratos e de média e grande escala, reminiscentes do expressionismo, e nas referências subtis a um período de trauma coletivo, turbulência e alienação, que se estende do passado até aos nossos dias. Loretta Fahrenholz vive e trabalha em Berlim. As suas exposições individuais recentes incluem: “A Decade that Exploded”, n.b.k. As suas inúmeras exposições coletivas incluem os seguintes espaços: Fundación Banco Santander (Madrid); Kunsthalle Bern; MoMA PS1 (Nova Iorque); KW Institute for Contemporary Art (Berlim); Hammer Museum (Los Angeles); Kunsthaus Hamburg; e White Columns (Nova Iorque). Maumaus / Lumiar Cité é uma estrutura financiada por Ministério da Cultura / Direção-Geral das Artes e apoiada pela Câmara Municipal de Lisboa e pela Junta de Freguesia do Lumiar. ------ For her ever first solo exhibition in Portugal, the artist and film-maker Loretta Fahrenholz premiers her latest video, produced in collaboration with K8 Howl and Jak Ritger (TRLLM) for a concert by American artist and musician Kim Gordon. Installed at Lumiar Cité, this collage of street scenes from various US states forms the backdrop for a series of photographs taken during the artist’s summer 2020 residency in Lisbon. The images on the plasma screen showing the film merge with the medium- and large-format photographs, creating an installation that encompasses the space, the effects of which unfold both inside and outside the gallery. The photographs were created using a technique developed by Fahrenholz herself, whereby the subjects captured – here a group of young women – are fragmented to the point of being almost unrecognisable. Together with the exhibition’s title, this process of deconstruction references aspects of art history and the rapidly changing social conditions in the first two decades of the twentieth century. The title itself is borrowed from the poem Hell’s Wisdom by Dada artist Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven, whose texts were produced using similar techniques to those of avant-garde painting – fragmentation, changes of perspective and corporeal disintegration. The power of Fahrenholz’s photographs lies in their combination of semi-abstract, medium- and large-scale motifs, reminiscent of expressionist work, and subtle references to a period of collective trauma, turmoil and alienation in the past, extended to our present day. Loretta Fahrenholz lives and works in Berlin.
