INAUGURAÇÃO | Movimento Coaxial de Pedro Vaz A exposição Movimento Coaxial aprofunda uma pesquisa iniciada no contexto da residência artística Pico do Refúgio, em São Miguel, Açores, em Novembro de 2018. No início da residência, Pedro Vaz entrou em contacto com a biografia e trabalho do pintor e etnógrafo Luís Bernardo de Ataíde (1883-1955), antepassado dos actuais responsáveis pela residência. As pinturas mostraram-se particularmente pertinentes, já que são paisagens resultantes da relação de um outro artista com o meio natural da ilha. Por este motivo, decidiu tomá-las como fonte e ponto de partida, procurando entender o pensamento e a forma como o seu antecessor se relacionava com o lugar, a ilha de São Miguel. A presente exposição é assim investida da vontade de questionar a subjectividade do artista na escolha do enquadramento da paisagem. Todas as peças são atravessadas por um cariz duplo: escolha, não escolha; enquadramento, não enquadramento; o que é visível e o que é retirado à visibilidade. Esta duplicidade é posta em acção através de mecanismos diversos. A exposição integra instalação de pintura, escultura-vídeo, caixas de pintura, mapas, para além de um trabalho do próprio Luís Bernardo de Ataíde. Pedro Vaz (1977, Maputo, Moçambique). Vive e trabalha em Lisboa. É licenciado em Pintura pela Faculdade de Belas Artes da Universidade de Lisboa (2006). O seu trabalho artístico centra-se numa pesquisa sobre natureza e paisagem, maioritariamente em pintura e instalação vídeo. O contacto com o lugar é essencial na sua prática, pelo que os seus projectos incluem muito frequentemente viagens solitárias, ou residências imersivas. Estas permitem-lhe elaborar sobre a separação ancestral entre a natureza e o ser humano, num tempo digital, industrial e urbano. Algumas recentes incluem o Tour du Mont-Blanc (Fr, It, CH), as Superstition Mountains (residência Onloaded, phICA, Phoenix) ou a Floresta Amazónica (residência Labverde, Manaus). O Jornal Público (suplemento Y) distinguiu em Dezembro de 2018 a exposição individual Azimute, na Galeria 111, Lisboa, na sua selecção das dez melhores mostras de 2018, em Portugal. Para além dessa, exposições recentes a destacar incluem: Muitas vezes marquei encontro comigo próprio no ponto zero, Casa Museu Júlio Pomar, Lisboa (2019); Second Nature, The Kreeger Museum, Washington D.C., EUA (2018); depois do choque, os trópicos, Galeria Luísa Strina, São Paulo (2018); Supersition Wilderness, Galeria Enrique Guerrero, Cidade do México (2017) ou Segunda Natureza, MAAT | Museu de Arte, Arquitetura e Tecnologia, Lisboa (2016). - [ENG] OPENING | Movimento Coaxial by Pedro Vaz The exhibition Movimento Coaxial, deepens a research that started in the context of the artistic residence Pico do Refúgio in São Miguel, Azores in November 2018. In the beginning of the residency, Pedro Vaz encountered the biography and work of Luís Bernardo de Ataíde (1883-1955), painter, ethnographer and ancestor of the people currently responsible for the residency. The paintings revealed particularly pertinent, since they are landscapes that resulted of the relation of another artist with the natural environment of the island. For this reason, he decided to take them as source and starting point, seeking to understand the thought and the way his ancestor related to the place, the island of São Miguel. The exhibition is, therefore, invested in the will to question the subjectivity of the artist in his choice of the landscape framework. All the pieces are crossed by a double nature: choice, no choice; framework, no frame- work; what is visible and what is removed to visibility. This duplicity is put to action through diverse mechanisms. The exhibition integrates painting installation, video-sculpture, painting boxes, maps, as well as a work by Luís Bernardo de Ataíde himself. Pedro Vaz (1977, Maputo, Mozambique). Lives and works in Lisbon. He graduated in Painting from the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon (2006). His artistic work focuses on research around the themes of nature and landscape, mostly in painting and video installation. Personal contact with the place is essential in his practice, and his projects often include solitary travel, or immersive residences. These two tools have made possible, using a great diversity of natural landscapes, to elaborate on the ancestral separation between nature and human being, in a digital, industrial and urban time. In the last decade, Pedro Vaz has developed expeditions and residences in places such as the Tour du Mont-Blanc (Fr, It, CH), the Superstition Mountains (in context of In context of Onloaded residence (PHICA, Phoenix, USA), to Caminho do Ouro (Pivô Pesquisa residence, São Paulo), or to the Amazon Forest (Labverde residence, Manaus). In December 2018 Público Newspaper (Supplement Y) appointed the individual exhibi- tion Azimute, at Galeria 111, Lisbon, in its selection of the ten best shows of 2018, in Portugal.
