Many things in Taiwan have a relationship with Portugal that can be described as one between the authentic and the non-authentic. For instance, the Portuguese pronunciation of Formosa versus the Taiwanese pronunciation “福爾摩沙 (Fú’ěrmóshā)”, the actual streets of Lisbon versus the European-style backdrops in Taiwanese wedding photography studios and not least the Pastel de Nata versus the Taiwanese-style Portuguese egg tart.
Sean Wang explores this relationship much like Platos cave analogy. When entering the reality of Europe, the representation of Europe and the contrasting reality became the main focus of his residency.
When in Taiwan, Sean describes applying for remote exhibitions in Europe. Once accepted for an exhibition in Athens, they sent back photos of artwork pasted on a wall, but without indication of it being at the exhibition itself or simply stuck to a wall in a storage room. To prove the authenticity of his endeavours, he recreated the wall in Taiwan with accompanying photos that emulated a gallery exhibition.
