No centro da cidade, em pleno verão, André Costa e Inês Mendes Leal convidam-nos a sondar o segredo e o espanto do movimento. Estes artistas apropriam-se da expressão “they swirl”, da canção The Word Hurricane da dupla francesa AIR, para traduzir uma nova realidade que surge da relação entre duas partes diferentes. Aqui, devemos deixar-nos levar pelo fenómeno do movimento circular, incerto, infinito; impelidos pelo sopro do vento que não sabemos de onde vem nem para onde nos leva.

In the city centre, in the height of summer, André Costa and Inês Mendes Leal invite us to explore the secret and wonder of movement. These artists borrow the expression "they swirl" from the song The Word Hurricane by the French duo AIR, to translate a new reality that emerges from the relationship between two distinct parts. Here, we must allow ourselves to be carried away by the phenomenon of circular, uncertain, infinite movement ; propelled by the breath of the wind which we do not know where it comes from nor where it takes us.

André Costa (1989) nascido no Rio de Janeiro, Brasil, vive e trabalha em Lisboa desde 2008. Rejeitando a representação na pintura, o seu trabalho busca uma pintura que seja a materialização própria da experiência artística – uma pintura que não representa: apresenta-se enquanto si própria. Expandindo esse conceito para o campo presencial, atua também no campo da instalação criando obras que incitam o contacto direto com o expectador.

Rejecting representation in painting, his work seeks a painting that embodies the artistic experience itself — a painting that does not represent but presents itself on its own. Expanding this concept to the physical realm, he also works in installation art, creating pieces that provoke direct engagement with the viewer.

Inês Mendes Leal (1997) é uma artista multidisciplinar que vive e trabalha em Lisboa. As suas instalações combinam fotografia, vídeo, som, escultura, desenho e parafernálias encontradas numa exploração do efeito da ação na materialidade e na representação material da ação, fixando-se em duas questões principais: como é que um gesto externo afeta uma imagem? Inversamente, como pode um ato ser materializado? Toda a sua prática é atravessada por uma atração pelo vazio em movimento – procura revelar, sentir e integrar o invisível no visível.

Inês Mendes Leal (born 1997) is a multidisciplinary artist who lives and works in Lisbon. Her installations combine photography, video, sound, sculpture, drawing, and found objects in an exploration of the effect of action on materiality and the material representation of action, focusing on two main questions: How does an external gesture affect an image? Conversely, how can an act be materialized? Her entire practice is permeated by an attraction to moving emptiness — she seeks to reveal, feel, and integrate the invisible into the visible.
