(english version below) Arte é, em muitos casos, categorizada para que o discurso crítico possa desenvolver-se. O discurso critico permite que se estabeleça o diálogo, uma opinião e, possivelmente, impulsiona o progresso de uma disciplina artística. A orgânica e estrutura dessas disciplinas possibilita a existência do mercado de arte e da História da Arte. Esta exposição irá focar-se na diluição destes limites com o objectivo de criar uma nova e indefinida área para agir entre diferentes media. A imposição destas categorias será interrogada através da natureza estética e conceptual das obras apresentadas. Gostaríamos de nos focar na multiplicidade de estados intrínsecos a um objeto artístico, sejam estes despertados pela sua função, materialidade, valor estético ou pelo seu posicionamento em relação ao espaço. Temos vindo a sentir uma curiosidade na forma de um medium agir como outro. Dentro desta exposição a mesma obra pode assumir o valor material e ontológico de um outro medium, permitindo diferentes interpretações. Por exemplo, uma fotografia adquirir propriedades escultóricas ou uma escultura surgir como realidade arquitectónica. Misturando o variado leque de conceitos a que cada medium é regularmente associado, isto irá permitir que o observador decida por si mesmo o possível significado destas obras. Nesta exposição, o Espaço Painel, Porto, apresenta obras de duas artistas internacionais: Edit Oderbolz (Suíça) e Laurie Kang (Canadá). Os tecidos fluídos de Oderbolz - Untitled, 2017 - transformam o espaço físico, consequentemente ativado de forma distinta por cada visitante, numa interação influenciada pelos seus interesses teóricos, pré-conceitos e sensibilidade visual. Por sua vez, Parallelogram Studies, 2013, de Laurie Kang incide sobre a manipulação de materiais fotográficos onde a artista supera as ideias preconcebidas de colagem através da exploração da forma e disposição do material, permitindo que cada visitante considere o seu trabalho como algo diferente. Esta exposição irá funcionar num desfocado estado de alteridade. É a partir deste processo de pensamento que a abordagem para com a estética, códigos e até mesmo categorizações destas obras de arte serão reconsiderados. The arrangement and structure of these mediums allows for the art market and an art canon to become actualised. What this exhibition will focus upon is the blurring of these boundaries, with the aim for a new and undefined area to act within. The imposition of these categories will be questioned through the aesthetic and conceptual nature of these works. We would like to focus on the multiplicity of an art object; whether this be its physical material, aesthetic value or environmental placement. We have become intrigued by the idea that one medium can act as another. Within this exhibition the art object can borrow the codes of a different medium allowing for disparate interpretations. For example, photographic form acting as sculpture, or sculpture acting as architecture. By blending the varied concepts that each medium often pertains, this will allow the viewer to decide for themselves what these artworks can mean. This month long exhibition held at Painel Gallery, Porto, will present the works of two international artists Edit Oderbolz (Switzerland) and Laurie Kang (Canada). Oderbolz’s fluid works, Untitled, 2017, physically transforms the space which is then activated by each visitor. This interaction will be influenced by each visitors theoretical interests, pre-perceptions and sensory awareness. Whereas Kang’s Parallelogram Studies, 2013, focuses on the manipulations of photographic materials. Kang overcomes the preconceptions of collage by exploring the form and material display of each piece allowing you to consider her work as something other. This exhibition will work in a blurred state of alterity. It is from this thought-process that your approach to these artwork’s aesthetics, codes and even categorisation will be re-viewed. João Conceição and Ben William Harris, curators = Laurie Kang (b.1985) works in photography, sculpture, installation and video. She has been awarded with the Manor Art Prize, Basel (2004) and has shown her work in solo exhibitions at: Kunstverein Nürnberg – Albrecht Dürer Gesellschaft (2017) Kunstverein Baselland, Muttenz (2016) Kunsthalle Basel (2009/2010); Statements, Art Basel (2010); Centrum Sztuki Współczesnej / Centre of Contemporary Art, Toruń, Poland (2009).
