Moira Forjaz exibe uma série de retratos fotográficos de habitantes da Ilha de Moçambique, cidade geminada com Évora desde 1997. A exposição convida-nos a um diálogo com essa distância, mediado pela cor e pela luz que dominam os retratos.

Os protagonistas são ilhéus idosos que deixaram entrar a fotógrafa na sua intimidade, contando as suas vidas na primeira pessoa. Provavelmente foi a primeira vez que alguém lhe pediu para falar de si, dos próprios sonhos, da vida que levaram e daquela que queriam ter levado. Das suas frustrações, das deceções e das suas satisfações. Da sua vida. 
 
Vestiram as roupas melhores, as mulheres da Ilha. As capulanas (panos) mais caprichadas, tiradas do baú para a ocasião. Há sempre uma capulana para qualquer ocasião… e falam tanto até que finalmente chega o click que as imortaliza e lhes rende a justiça de um anonimato forçado pela história.
 
Ilhéus é um projeto sobre a vida, sobre o facto que tudo está dentro de um único grande céu e todos têm direito a ter um nome. Não há nada de mais importante do que o nosso nome: é só com ele que existimos.

Moira Forjaz nasceu no Zimbabué, em 1942. Estudou Artes Gráficas na School of Arts and Design de Joanesburgo. Trabalhou como fotojornalista na África do Sul e, a partir de 1975, como realizadora e fotógrafa documental de artes em Moçambique. Vive na Ilha de Moçambique onde trabalha em conjunto com a comunidade local, em vários projetos sociais.

Moira Forjaz is showing a series of photographic portraits of the inhabitants of the Island of Mozambique, a sister city with Évora since 1997. The exhibit invites us into a dialogue with that distance mediated by the color, the light and the shadow that dominate the portraits.

The protagonists are elderly islanders that have allowed the photographer to come into their intimacy, telling their lives in the first person. It was probably the first time someone asked them to talk about themselves, their dreams, the life they lived and the life they wished they could have lived. Their frustrations, their disappointments and their satisfactions. Their lives. 

The women of the Island wore their best clothes. Their most extravagant capulanas (cloth), taken from their trunks just for that occasion. There is a capulana for every occasion… and they talk at length until the arrival of the click that immortalize and grants them justice from an anonymity forced by history. 

Islanders is a project about life, about the fact that everything is under a single great sky and everyone has the right to a name. There is nothing more important than our names: it is with it alone that we exist.

Moira Forjaz was born in Zimbabwe, in 1942. She studied Graphic Arts in Johannesburg’s School of Art and Design. She worked as a photojournalist in South Africa and, starting in 1975, as a documentary director and photographer of the arts of Mozambique. She lives in the Island of Mozambique where she works together with the local community in various social projects.
