Nesta nova exposição de João Leonardo na Galeria 111 o artista apresenta obras recentes e volta a trabalhar exclusivamente com o universo material relacionado com o tabaco. Beatas encontradas na rua, beatas fumadas pelo próprio, cigarros novos e usados, pisados, dobrados, folhas de tabaco trituradas, cinzas, snus sueco (um tipo de tabaco que se coloca entre as gengivas e o lábio superior proibido em toda a UE com excepção da Suécia e a Finlandia), nicotina liquida, palavras escritas sobre tela. São usados aglutinantes como colas de madeira, cola em spray, gel-acrílico, tinta de spray dourada, emulsões diversas incluindo tabaco fervido em água. As obras são na maioria abstracções de conceitos que são sugeridos nos títulos. Outras são figurativas e remetem-nos para uma abordagem da representação do "eu" como o "outro". São na verdade auto-retratos de caracter universal em que cada observador, como num espelho, se pode (re)ver a sí próprio. Na diversidade de trabalhos e formatos, há uma tendência para um certo humor negro. Obras como "Toxic Country" e "The Wall" são disso exemplo. Outras têm um carácter contemplativo e sereno, como "Mantra" e "Prana (portuguese version)". A continuação da linha de pesquisa artística de João Leonardo, desde a sua primeira exposição individual em 2006, mantém-se fiel à materialidade do objecto e da sua ressonância simbólica, simultaneamente abjecta e sedutora. [english] In the new exhibition by João Leonardo at Gallery 111, the artist presents recent works and returns to work exclusively with the material universe related to tobacco. Cigarette butts found in the street, cigarette butts smoked by himself, new and used cigarettes, bruised and bent, crushed tobacco leaves, ashes, Swedish snus (a tobacco product that is placed between the gum and the upper lip banned throughout the EU except Sweden and Finland), liquid nicotine and words written on canvas. Various binders are used such as: wood glues, spray glue, gel-acrylic medium, gold spray paint and emulsions including tobacco boiled in water. The works are mostly abstractions of concepts that are suggested in the titles. Others are figurative and refer to an approach of the representation of the "I " as the "other". Actually, they are in fact self-portraits of universal character in which each observer, as he would in a mirror, can (re)view himself. In the diversity of works and formats, there is a tendency for a certain black humour. Works such as "Toxic Country" and "The Wall" are examples of this. Others are purely contemplative and serene, as "Mantra" and "Prana (Portuguese version)". The continuation of the line of artistic research of João Leonardo, since his first solo exhibition in 2006, stays true to the materiality of the object and its symbolic resonance, simultaneously abject and seductive.
