APSCS, What is it?
The Academy of Portuguese Social-Cultural Studies - APSCS is a course designed by the Slow Motion Tours Project but also a study group aiming to learn, reflect and share important information about what´s Portugal “identity”, therefore about the Portuguese cultural and social essence. It aims to cover a big range of fields (history, culture, ecology, society, etc.) and, above all, it is the perfect excuse for the group to spend a good time together. Learning, thinking, debating and getting a very unique perspective and reflection about this so peculiar identity and culture. The main goal is to dive, in a very deep and significant way, into the authentic Portuguese “soul”, history and culture.

APSCS (L4) - The “Dark Side” of Portuguese History or several events that are not really talked about
Just like a person that tends to highlight his/her “bright sides”, also a country´s historical identity tends to be built based on the glorious, or considered glorious, events or perspective of the events. Said in other words: normally the version of the history and of the facts that we are told tends to be very limited and influenced by nationalist visions/ideas.
Portugal for sure it´s not an exception. Therefore, again just like a person, we can not be fully aware of our own identity if we don´t look deep also to our own shadows and “dark sides”. In other words, it´s important to look at our own mistakes and assume what our ancestors did “wrong” and what traumas we are carrying somehow as a collective identity. The aim is not to search for some morbid exploitation of all the traumas and awful events that took place in Portugal and/or that were caused by the Portuguese but, on the other hand, to dive deeper and in a more realistic way into our past.
So this session will take us all into a journey that you will hardly have the chance to do in any other place/way. A journey that, for sure, will allow you/us to find many relevant aspects of Portugal past that are normally, one way or the other, hidden or that are not just that talked about.

APSCS, Context
Many times what one really gets in what relates to Portugal Culture and identity is in many aspects superficial or just some sort of stereotype(s).
At this point, one of the main questions that one might ask him/her self is: Up to which degree do I really know the Culture and Identity of the place/country where I´m living well?

APSCS is developed by the Slow Motion Tours Project
Slow Motion Tours Project is an educational Project that develops Alternative Ecossocial Tours and Programs with the aim of providing a deeper way to get to know and get involved into the Local Reality. The Slow Motion Tours Project has a very good and deep knowledge about the Local Culture and Local Community social and cultural ecosystem. Or at least it really tries to do so ;O)

APSCS MENTOR
The main mentor of The Academy of Portuguese Social-Cultural Studies – APSCS is PJP (Pedro Jorge Pereira). Besides being the main mentor of the Slow Motion Tours Project, PJP graduated in Communication Sciences at the Fernando Pessoa University in Porto. He has been for many years involved in the so-called Portuguese Environmentalist Movement always integrated in the Social Movements that defend a more equal society and even an Alternative Economic System (maybe you heard about "Transition" too). Besides he´s kind of obsessed with researching more about culture, traditions, history and especially when is about discovering new perceptions and untold versions of it.

APSCS DYNAMICS
The sessions happen ideally once a month until June of 2026. Each session should last around 2 hours and each one is focused on a specific topic. It´s planned to start with a Slide Presentation or/and a vídeo, followed by a time for discussion, doubts, etc.
Each session is programmed to work just fine “alone” but of course it´s much cooler if you can join the full adventure. If you can´t or just don´t feel like and want to pick the topic(s) that most appeal to you that´s also fine. Although note as fine as the full program
;O)
