Sophie Hugues is an artist, researcher and educator. She completed her MA in Art and Ecology at Goldsmiths, University of London in 2022 and is the Co-Founder of the Walking Trees, a collective organizing community gatherings exploring ecological connection in urban spaces in London.

Her work roams the boundaries between the known and the unknown. Looking through spiritual, ecological and scientific lenses, she focuses on relationships between the human and the more-than-human world. Her work harnesses the power and sensitivity of art to explore questions such as: if the forest is our teacher, what can we learn?

Her personal practice includes storytelling, poetry, movement, photography and film. In community, her practice takes the form of gatherings and workshops, where art provides an exploratory vehicle for addressing the most pressing ecological questions of our time.

Program:

CAROUSEL 2022 An exploration of universal consciousness and migration as an expression of the earth. (voices of priest, wild bee expert, migration expert and land healer)

GREEN MASS 2022 A conversation between a hunter, a bird watcher and the more-than-human world, from the micro to vegetal to the cosmic. The score is created by measuring the electrical impulses of trees and mycelium and translating the pulses into sound.

LIGHT ACTIVATION CODE 2021 An exploration of how belief systems inform relationships with the more than-human-world. (voices of Anglican priest, Buddhist monk, Arcturian, entomologist, animal rights activist and conservationist)

RUPTURE 2022 Rupture maps the thought experiments that form urban landscapes. Collective receptacles for grief and hope occur in the form of a whale in the river and a five-mile-long queue of mourning, which rupture the urban trance and open space for intraconnection.
