arte portuguesa dos anos 80, ao som do two-tone. ... “The Specials” - Os artistas? As obras? – Sim… e sim. Há artistas especiais e, do seu trabalho, algumas obras são especiais. Pelas suas características intrínsecas, pelo momento em que foram executadas, pelas exposições de que fizeram parte, pelos livros onde estão reproduzidas, etc. É o que a Vantag pretende apresentar nesta exposição de cariz museológico com 3 obras da sua colecção permanente. Escolhemos trabalhos da década de 80 para permitir já alguma perspectiva histórica. Por outro lado os dois artistas destacados estavam nessa altura em vibrante actividade e por isso produziram obras de relevo. “Sword of Damocles” de José de Guimarães, para além de estar reproduzida nos livros fundamentais do artista, resolve uma polémica entre os que gostam mais de Guimarães escultor e os adeptos das suas pinturas: é que - sendo uma tela – tem justaposta uma peça escultórica! As obras de Pedro Calapez são menos pintura e mais desenho. Uma fez parte da representação portuguesa à 19ª Bienal de São Paulo (Brasil 1987) e a outra foi destaque da exposição individual no CAM da Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian em 1989. Dois artistas em duas paredes, frente a frente, a intensidade de Guimarães face ao minimalismo de Calapez. Dois tons – preto e branco – que aliamos a outro sentido: o auditivo. Também naquela década tivemos o Ska que, pela importância que exerceu em termos de harmonia racial merece ser reouvido. ..... “The Specials” – The artists? The works? – Yes… and yes. There are special artists and, within their oeuvre, there are special pieces. For their intrinsic characteristics, or for when they were produced, or the shows they were part of, or the books that include them… This is what Vantag aims to illustrate in this museum-worthy exhibition with three works from its permanent collection. We chose pieces that were created in the 80’s allowing therefore some historical perspective. Plus both artists were in a very vibrant stage of their careers, churning out some of their most relevant creations. “Sword of Damocles” by José de Guimarães, besides being reproduced in the most important books about the artist, helps solve a feud between those who prefer Guimarães/the sculptor and those who favor his paintings: despite being a work on canvas it has a sculpted piece juxtaposed! What Calapez does is less painting and more drawing. One work was part of the Portuguese representation to the 19th Bienal de São Paulo (Brazil 1987) and the other was spotlighted in his solo exhibition at the CAM from Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian in 1989. Two artists on two walls, face to face, the aggressiveness of Guimarães and the minimalism of Calapez. Two tones – black and white – that we bring to another sense: hearing. Also in that decade did we have Ska and, considering the importance it had in terms of racial harmony, a comeback is well deserved.
