[for English, please scroll down] Cinemateca Portuguesa – Museu do Cinema, 03.04.2018 17h30 Lançamento do livro “Walerian Borowczyk”, com a presença do autor Daniel Bird, Livraria Linha de Sombra. 18h30 Duas Horas com Walerian Borowczyk, Sessão-Conferência por Daniel Bird, Sala Luís de Pina Numa iniciativa conjunta da Cinemateca com o colectivo White Noise, a Associação Friends of Walerian Borowczyk e a Livraria Linha de Sombra, o investigador Daniel Bird apresenta uma sessão-conferência intitulada “Duas Horas com Walerian Borowczyk”, para mostrar e comentar os filmes de curta-metragem do cineasta de origem polaca, radicado em França em 1958, cuja obra foi recentemente restaurada permitindo a redescoberta internacional do seu trabalho. Antecedendo a sessão, às 17h30, na livraria Linha de Sombra, é lançada a monografia Walerian Borowczyk da autoria de Daniel Bird, publicada em 2016 por Friends of Walerian Borowczyk, Le Chineur Éditions, Carlotta Films e Éditions du Centre Pompidou. Conhecedor profundo dos filmes de Borowczyk, Daniel Bird refere-o como um “pintor, escultor e cineasta que passou meio século a trabalhar a confluência das artes plásticas e do cinema”. Nos anos setenta, a distribuição portuguesa esteve particularmente atenta aos filmes de Walerian Borowczyk estreando títulos como GOTO, L’ÎLE D’AMOUR (1969) DZIEJE GRZECHU (THE STORY OF SIN, 1975), CONTES IMMORAUX (1974), LA BÊTE / O MONSTRO (1975), INTERNO DI UN CONVENTO (1978), mas também DOCTEUR JEKYLL ET LES FEMMES (1981), um dos filmes de Borowczyk que a Cinemateca apresentou em ocasiões passadas. Walerian Borowczyk (1923-2006) autodefinia-se como um “artesão alquimista”, e inicia a sua obra no cinema de animação na Polónia, tendo colaborado com Jan Lenica e depois com Chris Marker, em Paris, onde integra o estúdio de animação Cinéastes Associés, explorando as vertentes da colagem e da pintura. A partir de meados dos anos sessenta, também realizador de obras de longa-metragem e ação real, trabalha o entrosamento de ambos os registos, dando especial atenção à sexualidade e ao erotismo nas décadas seguintes. A sessão-conferência é composta pela projeção de quatro blocos de curtas-metragens que perfazem a duração total de 87 minutos, a apresentar com intervenções de Daniel Bird, investigador, especialista em cinema da Europa de Leste e um dos grandes divulgadores da obra de Walerian Borowczyk. Os filmes a projetar são DOM (1958, 11 min) e LES ASTRONAUTES, realizado em colaboração com Chris Marker (1959, 12 min); RENAISSANCE (1963, 9 min) e LES JEUX DES ANGES (1964, 11 min); LE DICTIONNAIRE DE JOACHIM (1965, 9 min) e ROSALIE (1966, 15 min); GAVOTTE (1967, 12 min) e DIPTYQUE (1967, 8 min). À exceção de LES AUSTRONAUTES, são primeiras exibições na Cinemateca. Colaboração: Cinemateca Portuguesa - Museu do Cinema, Linha de Sombra, White Noise, Friends of Walerian Borowczyk ---- TWO HOURS WITH WALERIAN BOROWCZYK, A SCREENING-LECTURE BY DANIEL BIRD Cinemateca Portuguesa – Museu do Cinema, 03.04.2018 17h30 Launch of the book “Walerian Borowczyk”, with the author Daniel Bird, Livraria Linha de Sombra. 18h30 Two Hours with Walerian Borowczyk, Screening-Lecture by Daniel Bird, Sala Luís de Pina Through a collaboration between Cinemateca Portuguesa, White Noise collective, Friends of Walerian Borowczyk and Linha de Sombra’s publisher and bookshop, researcher Daniel Bird presents a Screening-Lecture entitled "Two Hours with Walerian Borowczyk", screening and commenting the short films made by the Polish filmmaker who lived in France since 1958 and whose films are being restored, allowing the international audience to rediscover his work. Before the Screening-Lecture, the Walerian Borowczyk monograph by Daniel Bird, published in 2016 by Friends of Walerian Borowczyk, Le Chineur Éditions, Carlotta Films and Éditions du Center Pompidou, is launched in Portugal at the Linha de Sombra bookshop. A deep knower of Borowczyk’s films, Daniel Bird refers to him as a "painter, sculptor and filmmaker who spent half of a century working the confluence between the fine arts and cinema." In the 1970’s, the Portuguese distribution was attentive to the films of Walerian Borowczyk, releasing titles such as GOTO, L'ÎLE D'AMOUR / GOTO, ISLE OF LOVE (1969), DZIEJE GRZECHU / THE STORY OF SIN (1975), CONTES IMMORAUX / IMMORAL TALES (1974), LA BÊTE / THE BEAST (1975), INTERNO DI UN CONVENTO / BEHIND CONVENT WALLS (1978), but also DOCTEUR JEKYLL ET LES FEMMES / THE STRANGE CASE OF DR. JEKYLL AND LADY OSBOURNE (1981), one of the Borowczyk’s films that Cinemateca screened in past occasions. Walerian Borowczyk (1923-2006) defined himself as an "alchemist craftsman" and started his work in animation in Poland, having collaborated with Jan Lenica and latter with Chris Marker in Paris, where he were part of the animation studio Cinéastes Associés, exploring the strands of collage and painting. After the mid-sixties he also directed live-action feature films, working on the interrelationship of both styles, paying special attention to sexuality and eroticism in the following decades. The Screening-Lecture features the screening of four blocks of short films, presented with interventions by Daniel Bird, a researcher, specialist on Eastern Europe Cinema and one of the great disseminators of Walerian Borowczyk’s work. The screened films are DOM (1958) and LES ASTRONAUTES, written in collaboration with Chris Marker; RENAISSANCE (1963) and LES JEUX DES ANGES (1964); LE DICTIONNAIRE DE JOACHIM (1965) and ROSALIE (1966); GAVOTTE (1967) and DIPTYQUE (1967). With the exception of LES AUSTRONAUTES, all the other films are screened at the Cinemateca Portuguesa for the first time.
