O Westway PRO nasceu há 5 anos com a primeira edição do Westway LAB Festival. Na altura, as suas conferências, coorganizadas em parceria com a AMAEI – Associação de Músicos Artistas e Editoras Independentes, afirmaram este evento de forma humilde como a mais pequena conferência profissional de música da Europa – mas sempre com excelentes oradores como Peter Jenner, keynote speaker da primeira edição.
Passaram pelo Westway PRO oradores e keynotes como Keith Harris, Charles Caldas, Helen Smith, Tom Silverman e outros nomes incontornáveis do mundo da música; e as conferências foram sendo de maior número e com mais participantes ano após ano, evocando à nossa maneira o crescimento de um pequeno evento chamado Eurosonic-Noorderslag, noutra cidade nortenha que começa com G, noutro país de navegantes. E assim convidamos, este ano, o grande senhor que é Peter Smidt, fundador do Eurosonic, a dar a keynote interview do Westway PRO 2018. Contudo as conferências não ficam por aí, triplicando-se este ano no Palácio Vila Flor em 3 salas temáticas: Westway PRO, WHY Portugal Event e INES Sessions.

Westway PRO was born five years ago with the 1st edition of the Westway LAB Festival. At that time, the conferences, co-organized in partnership with the Portuguese Independent Music Association – AMAEI, humbly affirmed the event as the smallest professional music conference in Europe, but one which nevertheless featured excellent speakers, such as Peter Jenner, who gave the keynote address at the first edition. 
Also making their mark at Westway PRO as speakers or keynotes were Keith Harris, Charles Caldas, Helen Smith, Tom Silverman and other essential names from the world of music; year after year, the conferences grew in number and in participation, rivalling (in our fashion) the growth of another small event called Eurosonic-Noorderslag in another northern city whose name begins with a ´G` in another country known for its seafaring past. Thus, this year`s honoured guest is the founder of Eurosonic, Peter Smidt, who will give the keynote interview for Westway PRO 2018. However, that`s not all with the conferences this year, as the Vila Flor Palace will set the stage for three thematic rooms: Westway PRO, WHY Portugal Event and INES Sessions.

Marcus O`Dair, from Middlesex University, joins Jordi Puy, from a newly formed Spanish copyright management, to discuss a future in which the distribution of rights can be carried out in a fast and transparent way by using the technology which underlies Bitcoin: Blockchain. Is this what the future holds in store? Or is it just a technological mirage?

The overarching framework for the European Commission`s support in the European music sector called ´Music Moves Europe` was announced on February 14th in Brussels. Susana Costa Pereira, from Portugal`s Europa Criativa, and Matthieu Philibert, from IMPALA – European Music Companies Association in Brussels, will present the initiatives as well as the most recent development in the post-2020 support program for culture in which the new Music Moves Europe program will become a reality.

Many people do. Managers, management companies, festivals, promoters, agents…each with their own lobby, of course. But who really speaks for the artist? Suzanne Combo, from LaGAM France / International Artist Organization will challenge Portuguese artists to find their own voice in the founding of a Coalition of Portuguese Artists and Performers.

Keychange is a pioneering European project dedicated gender equality in music events, at festivals, conferences, and in fact throughout the entire industry. Its goal is to reach a 50-50 gender balance by 2022, and Westway LAB is excited to be part of the programme, becoming the first Portuguese festival to sign on to Keychange. We are proud to state that already in 2017 Westway LAB reached a figure of 54% at Westway PRO, 50% at Westway Festival, and 50% of the artists-in-residence at Westway LAB.

Whereas Armonia Online strives to facilitate the processes of digital copyright licencing in several Southern European countries, Teosto Future Labs in Finland is a platform for innovation and research for Finnish Authors` Societies.
