THE FALL
A mais duradoura das bandas nascidas na explosão do post-punk em terras britânicas no final dos anos 70, os The Fall são um verdadeiro manual de sobrevivência contra todas as intempéries e expectativas, assegurando sempre uma relevância e premência assinaláveis. Liderados desde sempre pelo cáustico e carismático Mark E. Smith – único elo comum desde a sua génese -, têm visto a sua formação sofrer constantes mudanças conduzidas pelos impulsos do seu líder: espécie de pregador de rua em versão cool – um verdadeiro "Hip Priest", como a canção – que vai lançado farpas à sociedade, carregadas de veneno, jogos de palavras abstractos e contaminados por um humor seco e corrosivo. Influência fulcral em muito do rock marginal nascido nas últimas três décadas, os ecos do seu punk de tendências arty, alicerçado em ritmos repetitivos e guitarras cortantes, podem ser encontrados um pouco por todo o lado – dos Sonic Youth aos Jesus Lizard, dos Pavement aos Dead C. Donos de uma discografia imensa, onde se encontram álbuns tão clássicos como Hex Enduction Hour, This Nation's Saving Grace ou The Infotainment Scan, mantém ainda hoje uma saudável actividade discográfica do qual Re-Mit, editado já este ano pela Cherry Red, é o mais recente tomo. Foram também a banda preferida de John Peel, que melhor do que ninguém os soube definir: “They are always different, they are always the same”.


CARLA BOZULICH'S BLOODY CLAWS
Grande e carismática figura, paradigmática de um certo underground norte-americano, Carla Bozulich, guitarrista, letrista, cantora e compositora construiu para si, ao longo de anos repletos de projectos e colaborações (com Nels Cline, Ches Smith, Marc Ribot, Okkyung Lee, Mariane Faithfull ou Thurston Moore, entre tantos, tantos outros), um lugar único na fronteira contemporânea entre canção e experimentação. Fundadora dos The Geraldine Fibbers e dos mais recentes Evangelista (autores do primeiro lançamento de uma banda não-canadiana na mítica Constellation Records), é uma figura nómada cuja intensidade marca, de forma indelével e em tonalidades negras e elegíacas, tudo o que toca – estes Bloody Claws são disso exemplo primordial: uma formação livre, espontânea e em constante mutação, que reflecte o muito mundo que há em Carla Bozulich.


SKULLFLOWER
Verdadeira instituição nos meandros mais aventureiros da música nascida em ilhas britânicas, Skullflower tem sido o veículo primordial para as mais diversas divagações em torno das zonas limítrofes do rock de Matthew Bower – também responsável por projectos tão meritórios como Sunroof!, Hototogisu ou Total. Com um imponente legado que remonta ao final dos anos 80 e uma formação mutável por onde passaram músicos de bandas igualmente luminárias como Coil, Nurse with Wound, Vibracathedral Orchestra ou Ramleh, têm sido pedra basilar na mutação das condições estéticas e anímicas do rock, com responsabilidade em muitos dos seus avanços desde então – sejam eles noise, drone, stoner ou mesmo algum metal mais esotérico. Inicialmente conotados com a cena industrial que então se espraiava em Londres, mas demarcando-se desde logo de qualquer categorização mais estanque, foram dinamitando as premissas bases do rock até um ponto de ruptura tão feérico quanto libertário, antes de Bower instalar uma pausa sabática em 1996. Sete anos depois reaparece embrenhado em poeiras cósmicas e conluios kraut, apenas para se lançar novamente a caminhos esquivos e sempre inconformados. Recentemente têm-se apresentado como um duo, com Bower na guitarra e Samantha Davies no violino, envoltos numa aura quase cerimonial, conduzindo uma torrente de som totalizante até novos patamares de elevação.


HHY & THE MACUMBAS
Elenco de formação variável de músicos sediados no Porto, reunido e liderado por Jonathan Saldanha (HHY), membro co-fundador do colectivo Soopa. Têm vindo a trabalhar nestes cerca de 5 anos de percurso público uma linguagem audiovisual evocativa do jazz como pensado e praticado por Sun Ra e a sua Arkestra, fazendo uso de estratégias da herança do dub para deslaçamento do campo sónico que os consome, conluiado com um fascínio imagético pela cosmologia voodoo, expressa em cenografia de palco e nos seus admiráveis trabalhos gráficos e de vídeo, abertamente chamando a si a influência da obra de Ballard, Sherwood, Burroughs e Carpenter.

THE FALL
The longest running act coming out of the UK post-punk explosion in the late 70's, The Fall are a true survival guide against all expectations and disturbances, all the while maintaining its relevance and urgency. Lead by the mordant and charismatic Mark E. Smith, since its inception, the band has been through countless line-up changes driven by it's mastermind impulses : some sort of cool street preacher – like a true Hip Priest, as the song – spitting bile towards society, filled with abstract wordplay and a witty and dry sense of humour. A major influence in a lot of indie rockers born in the last three decades, the echoes of its arty punk, centered around repetitive rhythms and edgy guitars, can be found in the likes of Sonic Youth, Jesus Lizard, Pavement or Dead C. With an impressive discography, filled with classics such as Hex Enduction Hour, This Nation's Saving Grace or The Infotainment Scan, they're still maintaining a healthy activity, from which Re-Mit, released this year via Cherry Red, is the more recent example. They were also John Peel's favourite band, and no one is better than him to define them: “They are always different, they are always the same”.


CARLA BOZULICH'S BLOODY CLAWS
A great, charismatic and paradigmatic spearhead for a certain north-american underground, Carla Bozulich, guitarist, lyricist, singer and composer, has built for herself, throughout so many projects and collaborations (with Nels Cline, Ches Smith, Marc Ribot, Okkyung Lee, Mariane Faithfull or Thurston Moore, along with many, many others) a unique place in the contemporary frontier between song and experimentation. Founder of The Geraldine Fibbers and the more recent Evangelista (who were the first non-canadian band to record for the mythical Constellation Records), she is a nomadic figure whose intensity permeates, in dark, elegiac tones, everything she touches – these Bloody Claws being a perfect example: a free, spontaneous and ever-changing line-up that reflects the many worlds that inhabit Carla Bozulich.


SKULLFLOWER
An institution among the experimental scene in the british islands, Skullflower have been the prime vehicle for Matthew Bower's – also responsible for Sunroof!, Hototogisu or Total - longstanding journey within the fringes of rock music. With a respectable body of work started in the late 80's and a variable formation that included at some point musicians from such meritable projects like Coil, Nurse With Wound, Vibracathedral Orchestra or Ramleh, Skullflower's been a touchstone in the mutation of rock's guidelines, with great responsibility in many of its advancements since then – be it noise, drone, stoner or even esoteric metal. Initially associated with the industrial scene blooming in London at the time, but already defying any categorization, they had been blasting any assumptions one could have towards rock, taking it into a breaking point equal parts liberating and rampant, before Bower decided to call it quits in 1996. Seven years later he reappears wrapped around cosmic dust and kraut movements, only to shatter such conventions before drawing new paths of unpredictability. Recently Skullflower's been appearing as a duo, with Bower on guitar and Samantha Davies on the violin, enveloped in a ceremonial aura, leading a stormy flux of sound to new heights of spirituality.  


HHY & THE MACUMBAS
Variable size cast of musicians based out of Porto, assembled and conducted by Jonathan Saldanha (HHY), co-founder and member of the Soopa colective. The band have been working for the past 5 years on an audiovisual language evocative of the jazz as thought and practiced by Sun Ra and his Arkestra, making use of dub heritage strategies for unravelling the sonic field which consumes them, aligned with a fascination for the voodoo cosmology imagery, present on stage scenography and on their admirable graphic design and video work, and openly stating being influenced by the work of Ballard, Sherwood, Burroughs and Carpenter.
