“BLACK GOLD is human hair. One day, Saraswathi decides to offer her precious long hair to the deity Balaji in a temple to fulfil a wish. Again, someone somewhere in the world profits from her spiritual act.”
These photographs were taken during the development and production of the 2024 film BLACK GOLD directed by Takashi Sugimoto in a remote area of southern India between 2017 and 2022. This book engages in dialogue with the film. The two works are akin to an exchange of letters.”

“Numa região rural do sul da Índia, a poderosa divindade hindu Balaji exerce uma forte influência sobre a vida de Saraswathi. Como muitas mulheres da sua aldeia, ela penteia diariamente os longos cabelos escuros das filhas, num gesto ritual que atravessa gerações. O cabelo excedente adquire valor monetário quando os Narikurava, uma tribo marginalizada de caçadores de aves, visitam as aldeias para o trocar por bens domésticos. Esse “ouro negro” é cabelo humano. Um dia Saraswathi oferece o seu próprio cabelo à divindade Balaji, num templo, para realizar um desejo. Uma vez mais, algures no mundo, alguém lucra com esse ato espiritual.”
