Em Santa Maria, ainda que não tenha a tradição da Arte Bonecreira, é essencial que esta arte açoriana se mantenha viva e ativa em todas as ilhas. Desta antiga tradição de modelar o barro, se aprendeu as técnicas fundamentais para a conceção de peças artísticas.
The connection between the island of Santa Maria and the art of pottery dates back to the days when clay was exported to the other islands in the archipelago, a material that stimulated the creation and moulding of traditional dolls and pottery. Although Santa Maria does not have a tradition of doll-making, it is essential that this Azorean art form remains alive and active on all the islands. From this ancient tradition of clay modelling, the fundamental techniques for designing artistic pieces were learned.
