From the walls of Because Art Matters Gallery to the global stage, Flirting With The Great Perhaps delves into the chaos of the creative process. Into the attempt to map and navigate daily life. Into the ways we so often sabotage ourselves. Recognized as one of the most respected Portuguese artists in the contemporary urban art scene and illustration, Mário Belém crafts visionary worlds where the written words and visual imagination intertwine in a truly unique way. This new body of work by Mário Belém forms part of the artist’s ongoing journey—yet another reflection on one of the greatest paradoxes of our time: communication breakdowns in a world where information reigns supreme and knowledge lurks around every corner. Heavily inspired by the process behind The Book of Disquiet, the three ground-floor rooms of Because Art Matters Gallery showcase a series of paintings created over enlarged receipts and fictional scraps of paper, where the artist brings us close to grand conclusions—but never quite leads us there. This show also marks a turning point in Mário Belém’s practice: most of the works are flat paintings, representing a shift away from the sculptural, three-dimensional approach that has defined much of his previous output. It is a deliberate return to his roots as an illustrator, where written word and visual imagination meet in intricate, surprising ways. Flirting With The Great Perhaps was conceived specifically for the Because Art Matters space. It brings together nearly 100 pieces created over six months, designed to be experienced as a whole: a colorful, chaotic matrix, that could only be born from Mário Belém’s unparalleled style.
