Interzones: art, research and housing activism

Interzones: art, research and housing activism

The first hybrid conversation of the Just Housing for All Lab is coming up now, this time in collaboration with Cartografes Zangades (Angry Mapmakers) and the Zona Franca nos Anjos in Lisbon.

What are the possible interzones between art, research and housing activism? How can a radio soap opera or a graphic novel be a tool for analysing the city and its conflicts? How can artists and researchers become allies with housing/right to the city movements?

In this conversation Rocío García Soto shares her experience on collaboration between a group of researchers from the University of Granada and the Stop Desahucios de Granada 15M (Stop Evictions Granada 15M) collective. Since 2015 their collective analysis and reflection have resulted in several audiovisual products. As their latest creation, they have launched a radio soap opera entitled "Ya no estás sola" (You are no longer alone) that deals with the problem of access to housing. José Smith Vargas talks about his graphic novel, “Vale dos Vencidos” ("Valley of the Vanquished”) that follows a square in the center of Lisbon in deep transformation and conflict. The book, the result of a decade of investigation, brilliantly exposes the social struggles, the pitfalls of urban renewal and cultural associations, the political games or the deals on the street.

The conversation will be moderated by the Just Housing for All Lab members, Kitti Baracsi (periferias dibujadas) and Máximo Jaramillo Molina (co-founder of the Institute for Inequality Studies (Indesig) and the “Gatitos contra la desigualdad” project).

Language: EN+ES. (We can provide basic assistance in ES to EN online for those who need it.)

If you are in Lisbon, we encourage you to come to Zona Franca and be together with us. In case you are elsewhere and would like to participate online, please email periferiasdibujadas@riseup.net with a short introduction of yourself, your interest in the topic and which languages of the event do you speak.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Just Housing for All is one of the Fellow-led Incubation Labs recently set up within the Atlantic Fellows for Social and Economic Equity to support Fellows’ collaboration beyond their contexts. This series of hybrid conversations create a space for translocal learning on housing movements and their collaborations with other actors. #CartografesZangades (Angry Mapmakers) is a Lisbon-based initiative, facilitated by Amandine Desille and Kitti Baracsi that so far has been organising meetings in the neighbourhood of Anjos on mapmaking and social justice bridging research and action, largely inspired by the Anti-Eviction Mapping Project.
