Se imaginarmos o nosso trabalho como objetos de tempo, como podemos pensá-los em termos de visibilidade – como objetos a observar? Como considerar o espectador numa variedade de papéis: testemunha, observador, participante – e de que forma estes diferentes olhares alteram a performance/objeto? Recorrendo a várias práticas de perceção gostaria de lançar um convite para pensar a coreografia como uma situação estruturada – que requer um espectador. Como, enquanto artistas, avaliamos a questão da transformação de um conceito numa forma, e finalmente, numa proposta destinada a ser observada por outros? Como consideramos o público (se é que o consideramos)? Como trabalhamos para tornar a dança visível?

Time Made Visible

If we imagine our work as objects of time, how can we then think of them in terms of visibility - as objects to be looked at? How can we consider the spectator in a range of roles: witness, watcher, participant - and how then does this regard change the performance/object? Using various forms of practices of perception (including influences of visual artist Dan Graham, and choreographers Deborah Hay and Jennifer Lacey…), I would like us to look at choreography as a composed situation - one that demands a spectator. How do we as makers assess this question of transforming concept into form, and finally into a proposal intended to be regarded by others? How - if at all - do we consider our public? How do we work to make dance "visible”?

Ben Evans works chiefly between the mediums of performance and writing. His collaborative involvement with other artists and thinkers has allowed him to vary his focus and interests, from long-distance collaboration (with Taka Yamamoto under the name of madhause), walking and the city (with Alkis Hadjiandreou and Myriam Lefkowitz), memory and gift-economies (with Luís Miguel Félix), live interaction in the museum (Xavier Le Roy), and banal theatricality (María Jerez). With his solo works, he has toured throughout Europe and the USA, most often working outside of a conventional theatrical context (apartments, parks, art galleries). As his interests vary greatly, he has worked across a diverse collection of mediums including video, writing, photography, Facebook, and cooking. He currently lives and works in Europe, yet maintains a strong presence in the USA, where he is originally from.
