Três Curtas Metragens de Sarah Maldoror

Dia 30 de Abril voltamos à sala de cinema para uma sessão especial de antevisão da retrospectiva Sarah Maldoror 

Apresentamos Fogo, L’Île de Feu, Un Carnaval dans le Sahel e A Bissau, le Carnaval, três curtas metragens da cineasta numa sessão na Cinemateca Portuguesa, em introdução à retrospectiva da sua obra que poderá ser vista durante a edição deste ano do IndieLisboa.

As três curtas metragens em exibição foram filmadas em Cabo Verde e na Guiné-Bissau, na transição para os anos oitenta. Nelas e através delas, Sarah Maldoror explora o significado de uma identidade africana, a sua história e cultura através das festas e manifestações populares, conferindo grande destaque ao Carnaval. Como no último destes filmes afirma Luís Cabral, “foi a capacidade de resistência cultural do nosso povo que nos deu a força necessária para conduzir a resistência política e militar”. O papel essencial da cultura é assim revelado pela força e beleza das máscaras e pela música e dança que as acompanham, como o será em toda a posterior obra de Sarah Maldoror que poderá ser vista durante o festival. A Retrospectiva Sarah Maldoror é uma co-programação do IndieLisboa e da Cinemateca Portuguesa.

On April 30th we return to the cinema for a special preview session of the Sarah Maldoror retrospective 

We exhibit Fogo, L’Île de Feu, Un Carnaval dans le Sahel and A Bissau, le Carnaval, three short films in a preview session at Cinemateca, in introduction to the retrospective of the filmmaker’s work that can be seen during this year’s edition of IndieLisboa. 

The three short films exhibited were shot in Cape Verde and Guinea-Bissau, in the transition to the eighties. In and through them, Sarah Maldoror explores the meaning of an African identity, its history and culture through the parties and popular demonstrations, giving particular emphasis to Carnival. As Luís Cabral states in the last of these films, “it was the cultural resistance capacity of our people that gave us the necessary strength to drive political and military resistance”. The essential role of culture is thus revealed through the strength and beauty of the masks and through the music and dance that accompany them, as it will be in her subsequent oeuvre to be seen during the festival. The Sarah Maldoror Retrospective is co-programmed by IndieLisboa and Cinemateca Portuguesa.
