No momento da sua estreia, há exatamente 20 anos, "The show must go on" gerou polémica na audiência do Théâtre de la Ville em Paris, dividindo opositores ferozes e fãs entusiastas. Com o passar do tempo a simplicidade e o humor contagiante da peça tornaram-na um dos espetáculos mais bem-sucedidos da história da dança contemporânea. Foi apresentada em mais de 100 cidades em todo o mundo e galardoada com o conceituado Bessie Award em Nova IorquEm The Show Must Go On, Jérôme Bel disseca os mecanismos do espetáculo, colocando em palco vinte intérpretes e um DJ, que vai passando hits musicais das últimas décadas, incluindo canções dos The Beatles, David Bowie, Edith Piaf, Lionel Richie e Queen.e.

Em The show must go on, Jérôme Bel disseca os mecanismos do espetáculo, colocando em palco 20 intérpretes, 19 canções e 1 DJ, que vai passando hits das últimas décadas. Brincando com as convenções da dança e apostando num registo minimalista, Bel coloca o seu show radicalmente nas mãos da audiência. A magia do espetáculo nasce do facto do artista nos dar o tempo e o espaço para descobrir beleza e interesse na mais simples das propostas cénicas.

Por razões ecológicas, as peças de Jérôme Bel já não viajam pelo mundo, mas são remontadas localmente, sempre que possível. The show must goon foi apresentado em Lisboa um ano depois da sua estreia mundial (festival Danças na Cidade,2002) e volta agora numa versão remontada com um elenco português, numa coprodução entre o Teatro Municipal do Porto e a Culturgest.

20 performers, 19 songs and one DJ. By use of a simple action/reaction mechanism in between the hits and moving bodies, Jérôme Bel has devised a piece which brings together affection and concept, collective subconscious and exhibition of uniqueness. The show must go on, originally a song by Queen, is also the name of one of choreographer Jérôme Bel’s most prolific works. The simplicity of its effects endows it with the value of a conceptual manifesto. However, the performance, with its double covering of referential layers which almost conceals its meaning, is also a statement: “the show must go on”. It becomes an affirmation of the persistence of the moving bodies and of dance. Songs, bodies and statements are what the show is about. It resembles a sort of choreographic karaoke in which the performers do exactly as they are told to do in the words of the songs, thereby shifting the relationship between what we see and what we hear, what we await and what we receive, what we feel and what we perceive. Since its first performance in 2001, The show must go on has never stopped going on (wards).
