OPEN DAY Maiden Voyage Thursday 15th of April, from 15:00h-20:00h MONITOR Lisbon is pleased to present Maiden Voyage, a group show that gathers early video works from Alexandre Singh, Guido van der Werve, Laurent Montaron, Nathaniel Mellors and Ursula Mayer, curated by Mattia Tosti, with texts by Ana Cristina Cachola, Cristina Sanchez-Kozyreva, João Silvèrio, Josè Pardal Pina and Luís Silva. Maiden Voyage is a phrase used to indicate the first journey of a ship to the sea, an airplane to the sky, or other vehicles to its specified purposes; as it can be used to describe someone’s first experience. From a historical standpoint, early artworks are often the prelude to a retrospective narrative on an artist’s work. They often reveal the principal themes, aesthetics, sequences, and progressions that recur throughout their careers; or simply provide a point in time that gives perspective on the distance between early and current practice. Using this phrase as the title of the exhibition, we aim to explore the significance of artworks created at the beginning of an artistic oeuvre, by shedding some light on the intentions, contexts and atmospheres that surrounded the conception and production of early videos of five artists represented by the gallery. Maiden Voyage é uma frase usada para indicar a primeira viagem de um navio para o mar, um avião para o céu, ou outros veículos para a sua finalidade específica, como pode ser usada para descrever a primeira experiência de alguém. De um ponto de vista histórico, os primeiras obras são frequentemente o prelúdio para uma narrativa em retrospectiva da carreira de um artista. Estes trabalhos tendem a revelar os principais temas, estéticas, sequências e progressões que se repetem ao longo dos seus percursos; ou simplesmente fornecem um ponto no tempo que dá perspectiva sobre a distância entre a obra inicial e a actual. Usando esta frase como título da exposição, pretendemos explorar o significado das obras de arte criadas no início de um percurso artístico, lançando alguma luz sobre as intenções, contextos e atmosferas que rodearam a concepção e produção dos primeiros vídeos destes cinco artistas representados pela galeria. ___________ MONITOR Lisbon Rua D.
