ÂNGELA FERREIRA Indépendance Cha Cha 15.04 - 01.06.2014 [for English please scroll down] 15.04 | 19h00 Inauguração 23.04 | 18h00 Conferência “Divining the City: Urban Planning and Everyday Life in Central Africa” por Filip De Boeck 22.05 | 19h00 Conversa com Ângela Ferreira, Jürgen Bock e Elvira Dyangani Ose No espaço Lumiar Cité, Ângela Ferreira apresenta uma nova obra, inspirada pela sua participação na Bienal de Lubumbashi 2013 (República Democrática do Congo), constituída por uma escultura que evoca a arquitetura colonial dos anos 50 presente no centro urbano de Lubumbashi, capital de Katanga, província rica em minerais do então denominado Congo Belga. A escultura é articulada com as condições arquitectónicas do local de apresentação – neste caso, na sua primeira apresentação, o espaço Lumiar Cité – e serve ainda como ecrã para dois vídeos. Um dos vídeos documenta a performance organizada pela artista para a Bienal de Lubumbashi, na qual dois cantores apresentam o poema/canção “Je vais entrer dans la mine”, cantado na antiga língua predominante na região, o Kibemba. A letra fala de um homem que escreve à mãe sobre os seus medos em relação à morte, por ter sido forçado a descer às minas. No segundo vídeo, que dá o título à obra, a banda do Park Hotel de Lubumbashi interpreta “Indépendance Cha Cha”, hino emblemático dos movimentos de independência dos países francófonos, nos anos 60, escrito pelo músico congolês Joseph Kabasele, em Bruxelas, na noite em que foi alcançado um acordo, entre o governo belga e a comitiva congolesa, quanto à data de independência do país africano. Ângela Ferreira (Moçambique, 1958) vive e trabalha em Lisboa. Entre as suas exposições individuais destacam-se: “Political Cameras”, Stills (Edimburgo, 2013); “Ângela Ferreira–Stone Free”, Marlborough Contemporary (Londres, 2012); “Carlos Cardoso–Straight to the Point”, Galeria Filomena Soares (2011); “Werdmuller Centre and Other Works”, Stevenson (Cidade do Cabo, 2010); “Hard Rain Show”, Museu Coleção Berardo (2008) e La Criée (Rennes, 2008); “Maison Tropicale”, Pavilhão Português da 52ª Bienal de Veneza (2007); e “Em Sítio Algum”, Museu do Chiado (2003). Das suas exposições coletivas recentes destacam-se: 3ª Bienal de Lubumbashi (2013); “Between Walls and Windows”, Haus der Kulturen der Welt (Berlim, 2012); “Appropriated Landscapes”, The Walther Collection (Neu-Ulm, 2011); “Monument und Utopia II”, Steirischer Herbst Festival (Graz, 2010); “Modernologies”, Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw (Varsóvia, 2010) e MACBA (Barcelona, 2009). Um agradecimento também à Culturgest pelo amável apoio à produção da exposição. ----- 15.04 | 19h00 Opening 23.04 | 18h00 Lecture “Divining the City: Urban Planning and Everyday Life in Central Africa” by Filip De Boeck 22.05 | 19h00 Talk with Ângela Ferreira, Jürgen Bock and Elvira Dyangani Ose Ângela Ferreira presents at Lumiar Cité a new work inspired by her participation in the 2013 Lubumbashi Biennial (Democratic Republic of the Congo). The sculpture evokes colonial architecture from the 1950s in the centre of Lubumbashi, the capital of Katanga, a province rich in minerals in what was known at that time as Belgian Congo. The sculpture interacts with the architectural features of the place of exhibition – in this case, its first presentation at Lumiar Cité – and is also used as the screen for two videos. One of the videos documents a performance organized by the artist for the Lubumbashi Biennial, in which two singers present the poem/song “Je vais entrer dans la mine”, sung in Kibemba, the formerly dominant language. The lyrics tell of a man writing to his mother about his fears that he will die having been forced to go down the mines. In the second video, which gives the title to the work, the band of the Park Hotel of Lubumbashi interprets “Indépendance Cha Cha”, an emblematic anthem of the independence movements of Francophone African countries in the 1960s, written by the Congolese musician Joseph Kabasele, in Brussels, on the night an agreement was reached between the Belgian government and a Congolese delegation about the date of independence of the African country.
