No início do ano, um vírus novo veio alterar por completo as nossas vidas. E uma espécie de sombra instalou-se entre nós e o amanhã, pondo-nos à prova. Vivemos um tempo de incertezas, um tempo que não conseguimos ainda compreender. Julgámos que tudo passaria mais rápido, e inteiramo-nos que não. É no meio destas incertezas que a 14ª edição do LEFFEST irá realizar-se. Mas também com uma certeza profunda: nos tempos sombrios, a arte é uma ferramenta de resistência, uma espécie de força motriz para nos ajudar a ultrapassar este período difícil. Como escreveu José Gil: “resta-nos sobrepor ao medo que nos desapropria de nós […] as forças de vida que nos ligam (poderosamente, mesmo sem o sabermos) aos outros e ao mundo”. Por isso é, mais que nunca, nosso dever fazer mais esta edição do LEFFEST. Seguindo as recomendações que os/as espectadores/as têm vindo a seguir nos últimos meses, vamos fazê-lo com a máxima segurança. Para si. Para nós. Abrimos simbolicamente o festival com a exibição de 2001 – ODISSEIA NO ESPAÇO, de Kubrick (também a inspiração para o cartaz desta edição), um filme que nos fala de incertezas, do confronto com o desconhecido. E com ele embarcamos numa viagem de descobertas várias. Teremos 11 filmes em Competição, de cineastas consagrados, com obras que nos continuam a surpreender, e jovens cineastas, de vários países e continentes. As estreias mais aguardadas, algumas das quais terão no festival uma oportunidade única para serem vistas em sala. As homenagens e retrospectivas dedicadas a Paul Thomas Anderson, aos filmes restaurados de Wong Kar Wai, ao realizador e artista Clément Cogitore, à Cinemateca Francesa. As sessões especiais, entre elas, o urgente NOW!, sobre o combate dos jovens contra as alterações climáticas, ou a “Noche de Ronda” de Salvador Sobral (o México em dois filmes e um concerto). O CinemArt, com destaque para o novo filme de Matthew Barney, REDOUBT, numa das suas raras apresentações públicas este ano. E três iniciativas muito especiais: os simpósios “As Artes e o Público no Mundo Pós-Pandemia”, com a exibição de filmes e um concerto de Piotr Anderszewski, e que reunirá cineastas, artistas, músicos, actores, escritores, designers, coreógrafos e programadores à conversa sobre o futuro que queremos; “25º Aniversário de Sintra – Património Mundial da Unesco”, no qual participarão historiadores, arquitectos, filósofos, geógrafos e urbanistas, que reflectirão sobre os novos desafios que se colocam ao património; “Os Olhares em Confronto”, um ciclo de filmes que questionam o olhar hegemónico no cinema. Apesar das máscaras, do intervalo das cadeiras, parafraseando Herberto Helder, o milagre continuará a acontecer na penumbra da sala de cinema. Bem vindos/as ao LEFFEST’20! -- At the beginning of the year, a new virus came and changed our lives. A sort of shadow settled in between us and tomorrow, putting us to the test. We are living through a time of uncertainty, a time we cannot yet understand. We thought everything would go by quickly, only to learn that it would not. It is in the midst of this uncertainty that the 14th edition of LEFFEST will take place. However, it will do so with a deep certainty: that in dark times, art is a tool of resistance, a driving force that can help us overcome this difficult period. As José Gil wrote: “there is nothing left for us to do but to replace the fear that expropriates us from ourselves with the forces of life that (even if left unnoticed) powerfully connect us to others and to the world”. This is why it is our duty, now more than ever, to carry out this new edition of LEFFEST. Following the safety measures that spectators have been adopting over the past few months, we will do so as safely as possible. For you. For us. The festival will symbolically open with the screening of Kubrick’s 2001 – A SPACE ODYSSEY (which also inspired this edition’s poster), a film that touches the realm of uncertainty, of confronting the unknown. With it, we embark on a voyage of multiple discoveries. We will screen 11 films in Competition, directed by both renowned filmmakers whose work continuously surprises us, and emergent filmmakers from various countries and continents. Here you will find the most awaited premieres, some of which will only be shown theatrically at LEFFEST. From tributes and retrospectives dedicated to Paul Thomas Anderson, to the restored films of Wong Kar Wai, to artist and filmmaker Clément Cogitore, to the French Cinemathèque. Special screenings, including the pressing documentary NOW!, concerned with the fight for climate justice led by the younger generation, and “Noche de Ronda” by Salvador Sobral, an evening dedicated to Mexico through the presentation of two films and a concert. CinemArt, with a special emphasis on Matthew Barney’s new film REDOUBT, in one of its rare public screenings this year. Finally, three exceptional initiatives: the symposium “The Arts and the Public in the Post-Pandemic World” that, accompanied by film screenings and a concert by Piotr Anderszewski, will bring together filmmakers, artists, musicians, actors, writers, designers, choreographers and programmers in a conversation about the future we wish to build; “25th Aniversary of Sintra – UNESCO World Heritage”, where historians, architects, philosophers, geographers and urbanists will reflect on the new challenges imposed on cultural heritage; “Confronting the Gaze”, a thematic cycle of films that question cinema’s hegemonic gaze. Despite the masks and the empty spaces between the seats, paraphrasing Herberto Helder, miracles will continue to happen in the darkness of the movie theater. Welcome to LEFFEST’20!
