mala voadora in cooperation with Hosek Contemporary is pleased to invite you to an opening of an art installation 'Rat Choir' by Gunnhildur Hauksdóttir. The event is kindly supported by Goethe-Institut Portugal (https://www.facebook.com/goetheinstitutportugal/).


Rats make sixteen different sounds to express happiness in a frequency undetectable by the human ear. They name each other and play social games according to rules which they express with sounds, as their existence is mostly lived in darkness. 

Hauksdóttir created a score for human voices based on the rats’ social dynamics, sonographic images of rat sounds and human phonetics, thus assembling the Rat Choir.
 
The score for the vocalists is translated from sonographic images into drawings and human phonetics.

The banner, made specifically for Mala Voadora, showcases the drawings.  It shows the rats’ language translated from sonography to ink drawings.
