In 2020, the Covid-19 pandemic led to the closure of several borders across the European Union, halting the free circulation of citizens 35 years after the Schengen treaty. During June, 2020, they started to reopen, albeit since then free travel is still intermittent due to the recrudescence of the pandemic.
Between the 12th and the 27th of June, 2020, the Reopening Europe team travelled across 10 borders to gather a snapshot of how this transitory moment has affected the life of citizens, the governance and the economy of the continent.
As part of the programme of the Bruegel Annual Meetings we premiere the documentary of the road trip, followed by a discussion with Jessica Woodworth (movie director) and Giuseppe Porcaro (head of outreach and governance, Bruegel) moderated by Jennifer Rankin (The Guardian correspondent in Brussels).
