Zaratan AIR | Open Studio STEVEN SUMNER | “Remote Control” ABERTO | 27-28-29-30 Agosto 2020, 16:00 – 20:00 INFO | www.zaratan.pt | info@zaratan.pt ENTRADA | Livre* A Zaratan tem o prazer de apresentar “Remote Control”, uma exposição relâmpago de Steven Sumner, que apresenta os trabalhos desenvolvidos durante um mês de residência em Lisboa. Composta por uma série de esculturas e trabalhos bidimensionais mixed-media, “Remote Control” investiga os sistemas perceptivos, os processos, as estruturas narrativas e as estratégias estéticas que focam na questão da vigilância social. O artista, a obra de arte e o espectador encontram-se a observar o limite entre fantasia e controle, reexaminando o lugar da arte no mundo tecnológico. Para entrar no cerne do processo criativo de Steven Sumner podemos citar uma frase altamente repetida nos dias de hoje: “O lixo de uns é o tesouro de outros”. Priorizando a reutilização e a reciclagem na base da sua prática, destaca-se o impacto que a sociedade do consumo tem sobre o meio ambiente. O corpo de trabalhos em exibição combina objetos encontrados e resíduos domésticos com pintura acrílica e notas textuais. Este processo de assemblagem e estratificação resulta em imagens duras e decadentes, suavizadas através de elementos lúdicos e coloridas. Numa reciclagem massiva de histórias, imagens, técnicas e materiais, “Remote Control” resulta em uma crítica irónica da sociedade tecnológica e questiona a possibilidade de resistir a uma cultura controladora que incorpora prontamente a oposição e a diferença. BIO: STEVEN SUMNER é um artista britânico que vive e trabalha no sul da França. Obteve uma licenciatura cum laude em Arte Contemporânea na Huddersfield University (Reino Unido) em 2014. Antes de se assumir como artista, trabalhou durante 37 anos no desenvolvimento de sistemas de automação para a indústria. Esta vasta experiência na engenharia influencia a sua prática artística de uma forma muito imprevisível. Steven Sumner aborda os media artísticos livremente, mas com pragmatismo, partindo de qualquer material que considere necessário para representar as suas investigações: de lasers e sistemas de computador, até óleo sobre tela e esculturas em barro. Composed of a series of sculptures and two-dimensional mixed-media works, “Remote Control” investigates the perceptual systems, processes, narrative structures and aesthetic strategies that focus on the issue of social surveillance. The artist, artwork and spectator are caught in a complex ambit of fantasy and control, inviting us to re-examine the place of art in a technological world, and our place in relation to it. To get to the heart of Steven Sumner's creative process, we can quote a highly repeated phrase these days: “One man’s trash truly is another man’s treasure”. Prioritizing reuse and recycling on the basis of his practice, the impact that the consumer society has on the environment is highlighted. The body of works on display combines found objects and household waste with acrylic paint and textual notes. This process of assembling and layering results in a quite hard and decadent imagery, softened with playful and colourful items. In a massive recycling of stories, images, techniques and materials, "Remote Control" results in an ironic criticism of technological society and consumerism ,questioning the possibility of resisting a controlling culture that readily incorporates opposition and difference. BIO: STEVEN SUMNER is a british artist, living and working in the South of France. He obtained a Honours Degree in Contemporary Art at the Huddersfield University (UK) in 2014. Previous to assume himself as an art creator, he has been working during 37 years in the development of automation systems for industry. This extend experience in engeneering influences his artistic practice in a very unpredictable way. He approches the artistic media freely but wth pragmatism, starting from whatever material he feels necessary to engage with to represent his investigations: from lasers and computer systems to oil on canvas and clay sculptural works. His artwork reflects on existence and how, from energy and molecular fundamentals (particle physics), life and consciousness affords artistic and scientific enquiry.
