Debate em torno das retrospectivas do IndieLisboa 2020. Muitas das questões centrais da secção Forum do Festival de Berlim reflectem-se também na cinematografia de Ousmane Sembène: as críticas à violência e às estruturas coloniais, mesmo após o fim dos regimes, o feminismo e a luta de classes desempenham um papel central nos seus filmes. Que significado têm estes filmes para nós hoje em dia? Como os vemos, também no contexto dos debates actuais que voltam a trazer muitas das lutas daquele tempo ao centro das atenções? Que formas cinematográficas de resistência são ainda hoje relevantes, muito para além de uma mera estetização das questões sociais? E quão importante é a ideia de um arquivo vivo que mostra no presente o que, também a nível social, ainda se faz sentir?

A discussion around the retrospectives at IndieLisboa 2020. Many of the topics central to the Forum section of the Berlin Film Festival are also reflected in Ousmane Sembène’s filmography: the criticism of violence and colonial structures – even after the end of the regimes, feminism and class struggle, all play a central role in his films. What significance do these films have for us today? How do we see them, also in the context of the current debates that bring back many of the struggles of that time to the centre of attention? What forms of cinematic resistance are still relevant today, far beyond a mere aestheticisation of social issues? And how important is the idea of a living archive that shows in the present what, also on a social level, is still relevant?
