Transmitimos em streaming a conferência de Steve Paxton, apresentada pela primeira vez em 2019, para relembrar a emoção do contacto.
 
Steve Paxton iniciou a sua carreira com estudos em diversas áreas, desde as técnicas de ballet e dança moderna, passando pelas artes marciais orientais, que acabaram por contaminar o seu trabalho ao longo dos anos. Evocando a experiência do jogo, influenciado pela prática da ginástica e do Aikido – arte marcial japonesa que torna ineficaz a violência de qualquer ataque – criou, no início dos anos 1970, a técnica Contacto Improvisação que continua a alimentar, um pouco por todo o mundo, inúmeras investigações artísticas e somáticas. O seu profundo conhecimento do corpo, do seu sentir, da sua fisiologia e das relações deste com o espaço e os outros, expresso também na sua mais recente técnica Material para a Coluna, conduz-nos a uma outra dimensão: a da ética do viver em conjunto.

Tendo passado muitos anos em digressão, improvisando em solo, dueto ou em grupo, Paxton vive desde a década de 1970 numa comunidade artística no norte de Vermont. É destes movimentos que surgirá esta conferência. Uma oportunidade rara para ouvir um dos mais influentes bailarinos e coreógrafos contemporâneos.

A Culturgest apresentou o ciclo Steve Paxton que incluiu uma exposição com curadoria Romain Bigé e de João Fiadeiro e a apresentação de algumas performances históricas em palco. 

A exposição está agora no Azkuna Zentroa, em Bilbau (encerrada momentaneamente).

Over the next few weeks we will see more of the future by going through the past, we will incite new conversations, watch shows, listen to conferences, revisit exhibitions. We remind the conference that the American dancer, choreographer and scholar gave in 2019 at Culturgest to remind us the emotion of contact.

Steve Paxton began his career by studying in various areas, ranging from the techniques of ballet and modern dance to oriental martial arts, which ended up influencing his work over the years. In the early 1970s, evoking the experience of a game, influenced by the practice of gymnastics and Aikido – the Japanese martial art that renders the violence of any attack ineffective – he created the technique known as Contact Improvisation, which continues to be an important aid for all manner of artistic and somatic research taking place worldwide. His profound knowledge of the body, its sensations, its physiology and its relationship with space and with other bodies, similarly expressed in his most recent technique Material for the Spine, leads us to another dimension: that of the ethics of living together.

Having spent many years on tour, improvising alone, in duets or as a group, Paxton has been living in an artistic community in North Vermont since the 1970s. This talk is based on these movements, offering us a rare opportunity to listen to one of the most influential contemporary dancers and choreographers.

Culturgest presented the Steve Paxton cycle, which included an exhibition curated by Romain Bigé and João Fiadeiro and the presentation of some historical performances on stage.
