A whiff of smoke in the face

This exhibition is about the act of camouflage. There is no end point or perfect concealment. A whiff of smoke in the face begins the conversation by asking how we blend into our surroundings, and at what point we begin to do so.

This group exhibition has brought together five artists; Nicky Coutts, Theodore Ereira- Guyer, Mariana Gomes, Jorge Santos and Pedro Valdez-Cardoso.

Camouflage is a word that came into being fairly recently. It origins are 20th century, modern, and were produced from the concerns of its own epoch. Its origins come from slang and the quotidian language of the street. A common speech. An informal coming into being of a term that was created through the mouth rather than in writing.

Drawings, prints, photographs and collages have been brought together by the artists in order to think through how mimicry, and imitation can bridge the interstice between the human and non-human world, between nature and culture. In the presentation of these works dialogues are created, exploring camouflage as disguise, defence, concealment, and its relation to its environment and surroundings.

In camouflage the natural and artificial stretch over each other, blending into what we might think of the other. In this respect camouflage (and its geometry) become a language and systems of signs that when known can reveal the hidden. At what moment does something begin to disappear?

During this exhibition it will be launched a boxset containing 12 prints (two from each artist). The artists have used this opportunity to produce new woodcuts, etchings, photogravures, and Linos.
