They Must Be Crazy ft. Selma Uamusse estreiam "Expensive Water"

Hoje dia 20 Março pelas 16h, chega às redes o novo single dos They Must Be Crazy com participação de Selma Uamusse, intitulado de “Expensive Water (Mati Yakataika)"! 

O lançamento tinha celebração marcada para a Culturgest - Fundação CGD neste mesmo dia, mas pelos óbvios motivos de quarentena (COVID-19), a banda viu o concerto a ser adiado para uma nova data ainda por definir. Contudo, é com toda convicção que a banda solta o novo single, dada a intenção que levou à sua criação ganhar uma leitura ainda mais profunda em momento de pandemia global. Os #TMBC, em comunicado, reflectem:

“Ao longo dos últimos meses sentimos intuitivamente que era tempo de pararmos com os concertos para colocarmos toda a energia da banda na criação desta música. Durante esse período remexemos vezes sem conta na sua composição para ficar ao gosto de todos nós bem como da Selma, que convidámos para participar por já vir a trabalhar o elemento água (“Mati” é o nome do seu último disco e significa água no dialecto moçambicano changana), além de ter sido uma autêntica embaixadora na resposta às recentes cheias em Moçambique. Decidimos depois honrar esta criação singular com um vídeo gravado em estúdio e fazer um concerto especial só para o seu lançamento. Só nunca imaginámos que viria a ser lançada neste contexto! Não deixa de ser irónico que um concerto com vista à sensibilização pela preservação daquilo que é essencial à vida seja cancelado por um fenómeno que vem exactamente escarrapachar a urgência disso mesmo perante todo o planeta. E na realidade, faz todo o sentido que isto esteja acontecer. Ao mesmo tempo que somos obrigados a parar, está a acontecer uma revigorante limpeza do planeta, aos olhos de todos, que nos ajuda a compreender a nossa pequenez individual, e o impacto da acção ou neste caso, da não acção colectiva. O surto do coronavírus vem claramente acordar os instintos da nossa noção de corrermos perigo como espécie, colocando em evidência que os sistemas em que nos tornámos e onde nos inserimos estão cada vez mais frágeis, apesar de nos iludirmos do contrário. Mais que nunca, é necessário activar e fortificar as novas visões e movimentos globais. Mas antes temos de cair de joelhos na terra, deixar que as águas nos subam cá dentro até nos escorrerem pelos olhos, e voltar a reconhecer o respeito pela infinita força da Natureza, em todas as suas formas.  “Mati Yakataika, Si Ungayawolere” é um provérbio em língua nyungwe, idioma bantu falado em Moçambique, que significa que a "água derramada, não se volta a apanhar”. Tem duplo sentido ao existir nesta música: pelo honrar ao que é sagrado antes do seu esgotamento; e pelo aceitar e perdoar os erros do passado com a profundidade que nos permita agir com força revigorada para o futuro. É emergente entendermos que assim que isto passar, não podemos voltar às vidas com as mesmas cegueiras e comodismos dantes. Daqui a diante ou fazemos por evoluir juntos pela auto-regeneração dos nossos ecossistemas, ou continuaremos a aprender cada vez de formas mais duras, cada vez mais caras.”

Os They Must Be Crazy são uma banda composta por 12 portugueses que habitam as periferias de Lisboa. Nasceu em 2014 pela vontade de fazer afrobeat, e em 2016 trouxe ao mundo o primeiro disco, "Mother Nature". 5 anos após o seu início, nunca a banda se questionou tanto quanto agora sobre o que é, afinal, o afrobeat. À medida que enlouquecem com a complexidade da questão, compreenderam que mais do que qualquer estética que possa caracterizar a música que querem fazer, é na alegria da música que faz balançar o corpo que se unem à intenção em servir causas maiores e de intervir política, social, espiritual e corporalmente. Juntam-se para fazer música levantar o espírito e mexer o corpo com toda a convicção e soltura. Música para a comunhão, que enlouqueça as pessoas juntas em alegria e êxtase e as ajude a reconectar com a alma, para depois voltarem à vida com direcção mais alinhada e mais força de vontade para a mudança.

The new single from They Must Be Crazy featuring Selma Uamusse,“Expensive Water (Mati Yakataika)” will be released today (20/3/2020) at 4pm on youtube and all digital platforms! The release had its celebration scheduled on March 20th, with a concerto at Culturgest, but due to the quarantine related to COVID-19, the band had the concert postponed to a new date, yet to be announced. However, at this moment, it is with even greater conviction that the band releases the new single, given that the intention that led to the creation of this song has gained an even deeper reading in a time of global pandemic. Accompanying the release of the single, the band leaves an exceptional statement, given the current situation:

“Over the past few months, we intuitively felt that it was time to stop the concerts in order to channel the band´s energy into creating this song.
During that period, we experimented several elements of the composition over and over until the band and Selma, whom we invited to participate, considering her previous work with the element of water (“Mati”, her last record, means water in the Mozambican dialect changana), in addition to being a powerful ambassador in the response to recent floods in Mozambique.
We decided to honor this unique creation in video, recorded in the studio, and release it in concert at Culturgest. We never imagined it would happen in this context, afterall. It is ironic that a concert with the purpose of raising awareness for the preservation of what is essential to life would be canceled for an event that is stressing the urgency of this precisely. As a matter of fact, it makes perfect sense that this is happening. As we are forced to stop, an invigorating cleansing of the planet is happening, for everyone to see, helping us understand how small we really are, and the power of our actions, or in this case, of the collective non-action. The coronavirus outbreak took us all by surprise and awakened our awareness of the danger we face as a species, highlighting that the systems in which we have become and are intrinsically a part of, are increasingly more fragile, despite our ilusion of the contrary.
More than ever, it is necessary to activate and strengthen new global visions and movements. But first we have to fall on our knees against the ground, let the waters run through our eyes, and once again recognize the respect for the force of Nature, in all its forms. “Mati Yakataika, Si Ungayawolere” is a proverb in Nyungwe, a bantu language spoken in Mozambique, which means “spilled water can not be collected once again.” It has a double meaning in this song: for the preservation of what is sacred and is being exhausted, and for the acceptance and forgivness of past mistakes, with such depth that allows us to act with new strength in the future. It is urgent that we understand that as soon as this fades, we cannot return to living with the same blindness and commodities as before. Either we strive to evolve together for the self-regeneration of our ecosystems, or we will continue to learn in ways that are each time harder and more expensive for all. ”

They Must Be Crazy is a portuguese band of 12 who live on the outskirts of Lisbon. They started in 2014 from the desire to play afrobeat. In 2016 the first album was brought to the world, "Mother Nature". After five years of being together, the band never questioned themselves as much as now about what afrobeat is, after all. Literally crazy with this issue, they realized that more than any aesthetic that can characterize the music they want to make, it´s in the intention of serving greater causes and intervening politically and socially that lies the desire to make music as a group. Music that raises and moves the body with every bit of conviction and freedom, which in itself represents an increasingly political act these days, especially for Western culture. Music for the body and for communion, that drives people crazy with joy and ecstasy to the point of getting them out of their heads a little and reconnecting with the spirit, and then returning to life with new ways of seeing and more willpower for change.
