about Mecanica Craft Beer

This is a story that started in the Coral Sea, as we contemplated the colorful beauty of the Great Barrier Reef, the largest — no, that’s not it. That’s not how it started. It started in the warm waters and clear sand of Bondi Beach — nope. It didn’t start there either. It had something to do with playing with the koalas and watching the kangaroos. Hmmmm, no, it didn’t.

Because although we had finally decided to take that dream trip to Australia, traveled 16.000 km (that’s a 24-hour flight time) and arrived in the peak of the cracking hot summer, it rained for two straight weeks.

Our plans and expectations were flooded. The winter had basically made a U-turn and we weren’t prepared for it. As soon as we got our hands on a wi-fi password, we tried to find a way out.

What — to do — in Australia — when it rains?

Google automatically suggested that last part, along with when bitten by a shark. That made us enjoy the rain a little more.

Still mopey, we were sent on an Aussie craft beer touristic route. The first place we visited was in Brisbane, in what seemed to be an old car garage converted into a pub. Somehow, wrenches and oil barrels matched perfectly with tall glasses and beer kettles, as if they’d always belonged together. Our depression was eaten away by the cool vibe and the cool music, while our thirst was put down by delicious craft beer. Maybe - we thought - just maybe we were back on track for a cool vacation after all. We didn’t yet know it would change our lives.

We visited as many breweries as we could and started brewing a new dream trip - the one where we would go back home to Marvila (Lisbon’s craft beer district, where we already lived and enjoyed the pints) and make beer to drink with our friends (in Australia, people have the habit of offering their mates homemade beer).

The first thing we did when we arrived in Lisbon was buying ourselves a DIY brewery kit and created our first batch. We kept experiencing, studying, and felt pretty riled up about making craft beer at home. But then we wanted more. We wanted to share it not just with our friends but with a larger crowd of craft beer enthusiasts. Alex eventually started to help at the LX Beer factory were he drank up all the knowledge he could and Márcia knew that it was time to develop a brand.

The brand should reflect who we were. The memories of that first stop in Brisbane came back and Alex’s past as an aircraft mechanic and engineer - his love for cars, airplanes, engines, oils, rags - harmonized beautifully with the kind of beers we wanted to bring to this very special market. This brand became Mecanica Craft Beer. Cheers!
