To live a “musical life” is to live a life “in conversation.” A conversation with experience, with life’s mysteries, with instruments and the cosmos and the audience and with other musicians. Music is language and a way of communicating and interpreting experience. It is an operating system. It is a way of organizing sound and, for magicians like Dave Mihaly and Trans Van Santos, a road to walk on and a way of organizing a life worth living. A life with meaning and wonder and novelty.

 Dave Mihaly (EUA)
Over the last four decades Dave Mihaly has become synonymous with the San Francisco (California) psychedelic, spiritual jazz, and folk music scenes. Dave Mihaly has been in San Francisco since 1980, establishing himself as one of The City’s most sought after and idiosyncratic drummers, percussionists and multi-instrumentalists and composers. He has played with Jolie Holland, Mushroom, Daevid Allen (Gong, Soft Machine), Os Beaches, Killbossa (San Francisco’s only Tropicalia tribute band) and with his own spiritual jazz ensemble: Dave Mihaly & The Shimmering Leaves, a band that has included the likes of Ara Anderson (Tom Waits band), David Boyce, Michael Cavaseno, and Jon Birdsong (Beck). On one magical night in the 1980’s Dave even had the pleasure of playing percussion for the great Don Cherry. In San Francisco he is known as The Sensei, a title of honor and term of endearment bestowed upon him by the aforementioned Ara Anderson, who once told Trans Van Santos, “Dave Mihaly is a Sensei, you always learn something playing with Dave...”

 Trans Van Santos (EUA/PT)
Mark Matos (Trans Van Santos) emerged from the San Francisco music scene in 2008 with his band Mark Matos & Os Beaches, releasing the critically acclaimed “Words of the Knife” in 2009, an album that featured contributions from Dave Mihaly and other notable Bay Area musicians. Since that time, Dave Mihaly has played a role in nearly all of his projects; drummer of Trans Van Santos, multi-instrumentalist of Family Folk Explosion, and co-leader of Old Mexico (along with Dead Meadow’s Jason Simon). Employing a jazz ensemble approach to his rock/folk projects, Santos’ band has included Oliver Ray (Patti Smith band), Steve Mackay (Iggy & The Stooges), Seth Ford Young (Tom Waits, Magnetic Zeroes), and Matthew Szemela (Lana Del Ray). In 2012 PopDose Magazine said of Trans Van Santos, “...no one has been more successful at upholding and preserving the decades old San Francisco ‘Hippie’ tradition..” The LA Weekly credits him with “Re-invent(ing) Western Exotica.” and the San Francisco Chronicle once called him, “A Keuroac-ian traveler... like Bob Dylan and Richard Buckner, Matos is of this ilk.”

The musical relationship between these two San Francisco musicians stretches back twelve years. It is a continuing conversation between two longtime friends, brothers, searchers, and deeply spiritual musicians. These two have played a lot of magical concerts together. Last year they released the self-titled Old Mexico (Cardinal Fuzz Records), a psych-jazz-folk project they co-lead with Dead Meadow’s Jason Simon. The album received glowing reviews, with Blurt Magazine hailing it as one of the years best. The album was released on vinyl and quickly sold out in Europe (the last copies of the album are here in Aveiro with Trans Van Santos and will be available at the show.) This will be their first concert together since Trans Van Santos left California in August of 2018 and moved here to Portugal. We are honored to be a part of the experience, to host the conversation...

*Visual projections will be provided by the “Afro-Surrealist” filmmaker Vanessa Fernandes (AKA V_de_sotavento)!

And speaking of conversation: after the concert stick around for a conversation between these two musicians where the subject will be San Francisco: Music & Counter-Culture 1980-2020. You don’t want to miss it!

The ceremonial magic takes place on Sunday, February 2nd in the cozy confines of the VIC // Aveiro Arts House Auditorium. The doors open at 9:00 and the action starts at 9:30pm with a suggested donation of 5 euros. You do not want to miss this show. It will be the first time these two have ever played together outside of the United States, so come on out and welcome “Half Mexico” to Aveiro!
