Repetindo vezes sem conta esta linha do poema “Uivo” de Allen Ginsberg na sua mente enquanto trabalha, como uma espécie de mantra, Tamara Alves tem vindo a tecer uma narrativa que celebra de forma crua e poética a vitalidade primeva das sensações fortes, de um devir animal, da paixão bruta, por oposição à deliberação racional. Com base na ideia de que os nossos instintos são aquilo que nos define, a artista apresenta nesta sua primeira exposição individual na Underdogs um conjunto de obras pintadas sobre vários suportes e em vários formatos – acrílico sobre tela, aguarelas, esboços a lápis de cor – que, invocando um universo de figuras humanas (femininas) e animais em interacção com a paisagem natural e objectos imbuídos de forte carga simbólica (o automóvel, numa clara alusão à paixão visceral explorada por David Cronenberg em “Crash”), nos convidam a abraçar os sentimentos como uma força motriz, bravia e indomada. Um universo onde o amor, sempre o amor (que é ferida, dor, lágrimas, mas não menos prazer, regozijo, êxtase), pode ser fruto de um impacto, de um acidente, crescendo dentro de nós como uma flor silvestre. Um universo onde a noite é sinónimo de soltura e fereza, quando os amantes se encontram e os lobos se soltam. Um universo que evoca e invoca a visceralidade primordial contida no uivo inconformado enquanto metáfora para a coragem que nos falta para mordermos e nos agarrarmos àquilo que precisamos. Sobre a artista: Tamara Alves (n. 1983) é uma artista e ilustradora portuguesa que reside actualmente em Lisboa. Licenciou-se em Artes Plásticas (ESAD-IPL) e fez um mestrado em Práticas Artísticas Contemporâneas, onde o assunto da dissertação foi “Activismo Público em Contexto Urbano”. Interessada desde sempre por um tipo de arte que é “inserida” no mundo, fascinada pela estética da rua e pelo contexto urbano, Tamara prefere ignorar espaços convencionais como galerias ou museus para apresentar o seu trabalho na rua ou em espaços públicos. No seu trabalho é representado o panorama erótico de um corpo contemporâneo com esses efeitos de dilatação dos limites que o constituem. Uma paixão bruta, em vez da deliberação racional, um corpo-sem-órgãos, um devir animal, as sensações experimentadas, “esfomeados histéricos nus” (Allen Ginsberg). Apresentando uma linguagem plástica inspirada na estética urbana, utiliza suportes com características multifacetadas – desenho, pintura, cerâmica ou tatuagem. Repeating over and over this line from the poem “Howl” by Allen Ginsberg in her mind while she works, like some sort of mantra, Tamara Alves has been weaving a narrative that celebrates in a raw, poetic way the primeval vitality of strong sensations, of an animal becoming, of brute passion, as opposed to rational deliberation. Based on the idea that our instincts are what defines us, the artist presents in her first solo show at Underdogs a set of works painted on various media and in various formats – acrylic on canvas, watercolours, sketches with coloured pencils – which, invoking a universe of (female) human and animal figures in interaction with the natural landscape and objects imbued with a strong symbolic charge (the car, in a clear allusion to the visceral passion explored by David Cronenberg in “Crash”), invite us to embrace feelings as a wild and untamed driving force. A universe where love, always love (which is wound, pain, tears, but not less pleasure, joy, ecstasy), can be the fruit of an impact, an accident, growing within us like a wild flower. A universe where the night is synonymous with release and fierceness, when lovers meet and wolves set out. A universe that evokes and invokes the primordial viscerality contained in the non-conformed howl as a metaphor for the courage we lack to bite into and seize that which we need. About the artist: Tamara Alves (b. 1983) is a Portuguese visual artist and illustrator, currently based in Lisbon. She holds a degree in Fine Arts (ESAD-IPL) and a masters in Contemporary Artistic Practices (FBAUP) where she presented a dissertation on the subject “Public Activism in the Urban Context”. Having always been interested in a type of art that is “inserted” in the world, fascinated with the street aesthetics and the urban context, Tamara prefers to ignore conventional spaces such as galleries or museums and present her work in the street or in public spaces. In her work, the erotic panorama of a contemporary body with those effects of the expansion of the limits that constitute it is represented. A brutal passion, instead of a rational consideration, a body-without-organs, becoming animal, the experienced sensations, “starving hysterical naked” (Allen Ginsberg). Presenting a visual language inspired by the urban aesthetic, she uses media with multifaceted characteristics – drawing, painting, ceramics or tattooing.
