Os pescadores em Zarzis, uma cidade da Tunísia na fronteira com a Líbia, partem todos os dias a imaginar se encontrarão um peixe estranho nas suas redes, o cadáver de um migrante afogado. Mas Strange Fish não mostra apenas esse drama, com a sua indiferença onipresente. Antes, mostra a resposta profunda e humana dos heróis anónimos da cidade. Mas o resto de sua família continuou na Turquia, num limbo que não os permite voltar para a Síria nem ir para Europa. Hayati retrata a história de Osama, seu filhos e três jogadores de futebol sírios, cujos melhores anos foram escurecidos pela sombra da guerra.
