Workshop description:

Day 1 Textured self: Deepen self practice in improvisation. Embrace and let go of patterns and learn tools to support a never ending creative output in self derived improvisation that supports your authentic voice . This section gives dancers the tools to go deepen their self derived improvisational practice.

Day 2 Textured partnering: Learn tools developed by Folawole to expand your approach to partnering starting by an approach of deep listening , conscious participation and ending with dynamic creativity.

Day 3 Combined textures : a contemporary dance practice derived by Folawole after 10 years of movement investigation. This technique is fundamental to the creations of Folawole companies work. It includes ideas from textured self , textured partnering and direction and choreography from Folawole.

Folawole is an international soloist dancer ,massage practitioner , choreographer, and artistic director. He was born in Chicago Illinois, raised in Nigeria and started western dance training in USA. He studied dance with Bre dance studio (Afro American Jazz dance) , Boston ballet, American ballet theater, Lines ballet (contemporary ballet) and finished formal training at San Francisco ballet’s year round program, all under full merit scholarships. Previous to these trainings he paved his improvisational and performance foundation through Hip hop battles, social Nigerian dances and studying numerous live concerts of Fela Kuti and various notable musical artists in Nigeria. Later on in his career he had the opportunity to work with and be coached by San Francisco pioneers Sara Shelton Mann , Joanna Haigood , Krissy Keefer and Anna Halprin. Before building his dance company in San Francisco he guested with contemporary , contact improv , dance theater, contemporary Butoh and classical ballet companies. For his works have received grants and fellowships which include the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation Honorary Fellowship and the Zellerbach Family Foundation Grant. He has pursued his master in choreography and PhD in performance studies with a completed dissertation emphasis in African / African American studies. Outside of informal mentorships and dramaturge to choreographers and dancers across the globe he has been a Margaret Jenkins Dance Company CHIME grant mentee with Yannis Adoniou of Kunstoff and later he mentored Byb Kongo Bibene of Kiandanda Dance Theater through CHIME. His latest works include creating an evening length pas de deux on two principal dancers from San Francisco ballet at the Marina Abramovic Institute West. Through international festivals , residencies and teaching workshops he has had the opportunity to perform , teach and collaborate with a diverse body of artists. His principal mode of inspiration is derived through a contemporary Nigerian perspective that contributes to the cannon of discourse in contemporary dance and arts in general. His work embodies textures of improvisation, activism and conversations around wellbeing and humanistic sustainability.
