1989 - Túlio Rosa / Beatriz Cantinho

mala voadora in cooperation with Hosek Contemporary is pleased to invite you to a performance / work in progress '1989' by and with Túlio Rosa and Beatriz Cantinho.

Thirty years ago, Fukuyama announced that the history meets its end in the disappearance of any ideology that could have the power to counteract economic liberalism. Images of the fall of the Berlin Wall were broadcast live, and stories from the eastern revolutions allowed us to imagine a future full of new possibilities.

Not coincidentally, 1989 also marks the expansion of information networks and the beginning of the internet as we know it. The hegemony of Western thought, implemented through the very ideological structure of these networks, freedom presented in graffitis on the walls had finally penetrate the bodies that could now circulate freely.

The future then imagined is radically different from the one we live in today. The ideological clash itself seems to emerge again, as a shadow of a past that seeps into the discourses of the present. The iron curtain of yesterday reemerges on the peripheries of the planet, thus revealing the persistent colonial mechanisms of power where life seems to have lesser value. The disappearance of the totalitarian regimes in the West give way to a larger and invisible totality that precludes any understanding of difference as a constitutive factor for a possible (and desirable) future.

If 1989 is at the basis of the reality that we are experiencing today, which possibilities can be opened through a movement of return? Can revisiting historical materiality constitute a potent tool to reflect upon the present? What is the legacy of the images, narratives and discourses that were inaugurated then? How can we resize that past into another set of relationships and update the future?

1989 is the provisional title of the project that Túlio Rosa has been developing throughout this year, in various collaborations with other artists, in residences in Spain (Residencia Paraíso)
and Belgium (Kunstencentrum Vooruit).
