ARTISTS:

JONATHAN MICHAEL RAY

Informed by the act of looking Jonathan Michael Ray’s art practice largely comprises of works in photography, installation, print, drawing and video.
“The work I make has always been contingent upon, and deeply connected to my surroundings. Whether at home in the UK, or away on travels and artist residencies, I continuously reference place, nature and the past in the present.
I like to take the time to look at everything equally, and indeed more so at the things that don’t seem to deserve our attention, it is in these moments I discover and create meaningful connections.
By accepting all objects, environments and places as imbued with memory and time, I’m especially drawn to those that have lost their memory, or those that appear to have had their meaning fragmented, and through my work I create my own narratives or understanding of them, linking together or bringing to the forefront what I deem essential or wish to convey.”

PAULINE MULLER ULLMO

Muller-Ullmo’s interest lays in the visions one experiences through the act of reminiscing. Reliving a memory triggers a synesthesic state of mind where feelings translate into images, abstract colours, that compose one’s personal collection. This synesthesia is often reached after the complete
abandon of sleep.
Traveling may be the situation when one consciously accumulates the most memories. In the same way the hotel’s bedroom turns into the theatre of reminiscence, the turntable of nocturnal transfers.
The mystic held by the altar-piece bestows tension for multiple stories. The object conveys possibilities of narratives braided by the inhabitance of the room, one’s selection of memories and
the artist’s interpretation of a story. The possibility of its movements invites the occupant to partake in the appropriation of the room, investing the scene for one’s diurnal conversions.

SCOTT LICZNERSKI

Scott Licznerski is a self-taught Scottish artist based in London. With a background in architecture and living in Japan, Licznerski explores his understanding of space and detail through strategies of abstraction.
His bold, gestural, and sensitively refined paintings are a careful interplay between repeated order and interruption. The surface is progressively manipulated through controlled transactions of thought, chance, and decision: of silence and noise, where action is then held or concealed until a new language emerges.
He is influenced by the situational navigation of urban fabrics, censorship, the theatre of existence, and the beautiful accidents our cities subconsciously spew. Recurring themes in his work explore preoccupations with limits, duality, trace, and deliberately forming the non-intentional. Licznerski’s practice is about process: exploring, interpreting, and responding. In our immediately accessible and throw-away cultures, it approaches the redirection of focus and permanence to embody a mist that holds intrigue and alters thought.

WILLS BREWER

Wills Brewer is an American artist based in Los Angeles. He works in ceramics focusing mainly on sculpture. Which is based in an interest in artifact and the extent of human interaction with the surface of the planet. The intentional or unintentional histories humans create by manipulation of the nature world and perceived value placed on resulting places and objects. During his time at Third Base he has been experimenting with local materials and form. Using materials such as terra cota and stone, and the forms of the doelems outside Évora to ventura into new measure and exercise in his own work.
