No princípio era o verbo. Depois veio o corpo. A palavra e o gesto. E assim se fez a dança. Impossível separar aquilo que a Natureza uniu. A Associação Danças com História e Dolcimello trazem ao Castelo de S. Jorge um conjunto de danças históricas assentes no que de melhor a nossa literatura produziu nos séculos XV, XVI e XVII…

SÉCULO XV

Século XV, período de formação e sedimentação da língua portuguesa, com Fernão Lopes e Sá de Miranda em plano de destaque e com a tradição trovadoresca em pano de fundo. Lentamente, o idioma vai-se libertando do latim, pois até já os documentos oficiais ou vernáculos dispensam a língua de Virgílio e de Ovídio para passarem a ser escritos e lidos em voz alta no português do tempo das caravelas. A poesia, é o seu veículo mais primoroso.

Ao mesmo tempo, a dança afirma-se cada vez mais, assente na eterna tradição popular e na pujante cultura cortesã. A união entre ambas – voz e corpo – era inevitável.

Eis, pois, a palavra e a dança do século XV acompanhadas por instrumentos de ‘música alta’ tais como a sacabuxa, a charamela/gaita e percussão.

DANCES WITH HISTORY ASSOCIATION & DOLCIMELLO

In the beginning was the word. Then came the body. And the gesture. And that’s how dancing was invented. That which nature has joined cannot be separated. The Dances with History Association and the Early Music group IL DOLCIMELO are bringing a set of historical dances to the Castelo de São Jorge based on the best of Portuguese literature from the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries...

15th CENTURY

The 15th century was a period of formation and consolidation of the Portuguese language, with Fernão Lopes and Sá de Miranda in the limelight and the troubadour tradition in the background. Slowly, the language frees itself from Latin; official documents cease to be produced in the language of Virgil and Ovid and instead are written and read aloud in the Portuguese from the days of the caravels.  

Poetry, its most exquisite vehicle.

At the same time, dance increasingly asserts itself, arising from the eternal popular tradition and the flourishing culture of the court. The union of the two (voice and body) was inevitable. 

Here, then, is the word and dance of the 15th century accompanied by instruments including the sackbut, the shawm/bagpipes and percussion.
