Exposição que apresenta nove álbuns fotográficos de grande formato, com as imagens dedicadas à construção das grandes obras de engenharia, que Biel realizou e publicou através da sua casa editorial para a Associação dos Engenheiros Civis Portuguezes, actual Ordem dos Engenheiros.

Na segunda metade do século XIX multiplicam-se pela Europa as reportagens fotográficas dedicadas à construção das grandes obras de engenharia, como a construção dos caminhos de ferro ou a modernização dos portos marítimos. Este levantamento fotográfico documenta a revolução da mobilidade e a definição de uma rede de ligações que modifica e reorganiza a política e a economia do território. Em Portugal, o mais activo protagonista destas campanhas é o fotógrafo, editor e empresário alemão Emílio Biel, responsável por um dos mais extensos levantamentos iconográficos do território português neste período. 

A exposição Imagem/Técnica, os inventários de Emílio Biel apresenta os álbuns originais de grande formato com as imagens da construção das ligações viárias, ferroviárias e marítimas no norte do país, que Biel realizou e publicou através da sua casa editorial para a Associação dos Engenheiros Civis Portuguezes, actual Ordem dos Engenheiros.

A exposição apresenta um raro conjunto de nove álbuns fotográficos, parte dos quais expostos pela primeira vez na Exposição Universal de Chicago (1893) e na Exposição Universal de Paris (1900) — de que se destaca os Caminhos de ferro do Douro, Minho e Beiras, ou a construção da Ponte Maria Pia e do Porto de Leixões — que revelam uma paisagem acabada de ser ocupada pela tecnologia, preenchida de detalhes cenográficos feitos com as personagens que nela se movem a vapor pela primeira vez.

A par das missões fotográficas de preservação do património construído, o papel do fotógrafo torna-se crucial na criação de um inventário visual da construção das grandes infraestruturas de engenharia moderna, tornando-se assim participante activo na representação das transformações tecnológicas do território.

Em colaboração com a Ci.clo Bienal de Fotografia do Porto, a exposição apresenta ainda uma selecção de imagens fotográficas realizadas a partir das matrizes originais da Casa Emílio Biel & Ca., pertencentes ao fotógrafo Virgílio Ferreira, de um acervo de 127 negativos película de grande formato das obras públicas no Norte de Portugal neste período. 

A programação paralela inclui visitas guiadas e conversas com especialistas da história da fotografia, engenharia e geografia. A primeira visita realiza-se no próximo dia 15 de Junho, pelas 16h, com a curadora da exposição Susana Lourenço Marques.

Esta exposição faz parte do projecto de investigação Livros de Fotografia em Portugal, 1860-1910, realizado no Instituto de História de Arte da Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas da Universidade Nova de Lisboa em colaboração com a Faculdade de Belas Artes da Universidade do Porto.

This exhibition presents nine large-format photographic albums, with images dedicated to the construction of major engineering works, which Biel carried out and published through his publishing house for the Association of Portuguese Civil Engineers, the current Ordem dos Engenheiros.

In the second half of the nineteenth century, photographic reporting on the construction of major engineering works, such as the construction of railways or the modernization of seaports, was multiplied throughout Europe. This photographic survey documents the mobility revolution and the definition of a network of connections that modifies and reorganizes the territory's politics and economy. In Portugal, the most active protagonist of these campaigns is the photographer, publisher and German businessman Emilio Biel, responsible for one of the most extensive iconographic surveys of the Portuguese territory in this period.

The exhibition presents the original large format albums with the images of the construction of the road, rail and sea connections in the north of the country, which Biel carried out and published through his editorial house for the Association of Engineers Portuguese Civilians, current Order of Engineers.

The exhibition features a rare set of nine photographic albums, some of which were exhibited for the first time at the Chicago Universal Exhibition (1893) and at the Paris Universal Exhibition (1900) - which include the Douro, Minho and Beiras Railways, or the construction of the Maria Pia Bridge and the Port of Leixões - revealing a landscape that has just been occupied by technology, filled with scenographic details made with the characters that steam in it for the first time.

In addition to the photographic missions to preserve the heritage, the role of the photographer becomes crucial in the creation of a visual inventory of the construction of large modern engineering infrastructures, thus becoming an active participant in the representation of the technological transformations of the territory.

In collaboration with Ci.CLO Bienal Fotografia do Porto, the exhibition also presents a selection of photographic images made from the original Casa Emílio Biel & Ca. headquarters, owned by photographer Virgílio Ferreira, from a collection of 127 negative film from large format of public works in the North of Portugal in this period.

Parallel programming includes guided tours and conversations with experts in the history of photography, engineering and geography. The first visit will take place on June 15, at 4pm, with curator Susana Lourenço Marques.

This exhibition is part of the research project Books of Photography in Portugal, 1860-1910, held at the Institute of Art History of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities of the New University of Lisbon in collaboration with the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto.
