SECRET EPIPHANIES

“Have you ever experienced a true epiphany? Maya Angelou describes an epiphany as “ the occurrence when the mind, the body, the heart, and the soul focus together and see an old thing in a new way." It’s defined as a (spiritual) moment when you suddenly feel that you understand, or suddenly become conscious of, something that is very important to you  I have experienced several over the last decade; I keep myself very receptive. But, often times the moment is really casual even if the epiphany is life altering. I’ll be in the shower or walking my dog or eating cereal and suddenly, I’ll have a strong thought that will change my life or at least create a shift in my path. Usually it’s in moments of stillness and pause that the flood gates of wisdom and higher truth open. The thought could seem small and insignificant, but it’s the kind of thought that seems like it has a presence of its own. These thoughts are hardly thoughts -- more like, suggestive impulses from our higher selves. If I allow this kind of thought to sink in and live in my subconscious for awhile, it sometimes becomes a defining part of my journey’s unfolding. I invite you to join me as I reflect on the constellation of epiphanies that have become my guiding light in my creative path. Let me share my map of epiphanies that led me to this artistic moment in time and place.”


Description of the Project:

Secret Epiphanies, a concept by American artist Kate March, will premiere in Evora, Portugal on June 15, 2019. The new project incorporates dance and painting as well as collage and personal writings to present a meaningful, inspiring performance experience. Part exhibition, part live performance, Ms. March will share a body of paintings which hold declarations of brief but monumental moments of insight she has experienced along her creative and personal evolution. After the audience follows the path of epiphanies they will meet Ms. March at her large scale canvas which will be covered with journal entries from the past decade. The audience will have the opportunity to read some of her most intimate revelations before she covers the writing with paint in a live performance. She dips her body into paint and dances on the canvas, hiding the remnants of her creative voice’s history. This concept aims to reveal a secret, vulnerable, and transformative space with the community. Ms. March asks herself what does my artistic journey look like, what does it feel like, what have I learned, and what thoughts have led me to the present moment? Come share in her secret epiphanies.


ABOUT ARTIST KATE MARCH AND I AM 

Kate March is an American multi-hyphenate artist based in Brooklyn, New York. She received her BA in Dance from Connecticut College and her MA in Choreography from Middlesex University in London. Internationally acclaimed, her art has been described as pioneering, interactive, provocative, feminist, and bold. Ms. March explores her artistic voice through live painting performance solos where she creates large scale paintings with her body dancing on the canvas. She has performed around the world in places like the National Arts Club (NY); Ivy Brown Gallery (NY); Chef’s Club (NY); White Room Gallery (NY); Art Mecca of Charleston (South Carolina); The Four Seasons Santa Fe (New Mexico); The Hive (Tokyo, Japan & Singapore); SohoHouse (Mumbai, India); and Art Central Art Fair (Hong Kong). Most recently, she has been selected as the 2019 guest artist for the Eugénio de Almeida Foundation’s Center for Art & Culture in Portugal. In addition to her solo work, Ms. March is the founder and creative director of the all female international creative collective, I AM. A  global pioneer in immersive performance and dining, I AM marries the dining experience to dance, theatre, and improvisation. Through her work with I AM, she develops innovative performance concepts, redefines dinner entertainment, and explores the relationship between audience and performer. I AM performs across the world including a variety of unique projects in Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, China, Australia, the Maldives, Japan, India, England, and America.
