COLAPSO: QUANDO LIMITES, MARGENS E CATEGORIAS CAEM

Em Colapso examino os ambientes do mundo da arte quando os limites, as margens e as categorias deixaram de ser relevantes. Com a mercantilização e capitalização da arte de artistas que historicamente eram vistos como estranhos e marginais, o mundo da arte está a fazer explodir a rigidez formal do cânone. Interessada na liminaridade, eu exploro os espaços em que a linguagem visual desafia as categorias, maioritariamente por artistas de cor e mulheres cujo trabalho contém a simbologia narrativa da dupla consciência e a interseccionalidade — de olhar e conhecer a partir de múltiplas perspectivas. Em Colapso também me interrogo sobre como seriam as comunidades se permitirmos a desintegração das fronteiras entre o mundo da arte e a experiência vivida da vida quotidiana. Sobre o que acontece quando as instituições já não têm o poder de validar a arte e a arte é fruída pelas pessoas e ao serviço do bem comum. Como mudarão as coisas, com que efeitos reconhecíveis quando as pessoas integrarem a literacia visual em suas vidas quotidianas, empregando abordagens intersectoriais para a interacção, a mobilidade, bem como para acção política e social.


Sobre jill moniz
Os interesses de jill moniz focam-se na construção da compreensão, criatividade e inclusão através das artes. Trabalhou no envolvimento das comunidades no Museum of Latin American Art antes de se tornar curadora principal no California African American Museum em 2006. Depois, moniz foi curadora ao serviço do Dr. Leon O Banks, um dos fundadores do MOCA, antes de regressar, em 2013, às exposições 
de grande escala em museus e galerias um pouco por todo o mundo. Em 2016, jill moniz fundou Quotidian, um espaço de investigação curatorial que apoia artistas locais e contribui para a formação da literacia visual. É consultora em programas de envolvimento da comunidade e programação no Getty Center e integra vários  conselhos consultivos. Doutorada em Antropologia Cultural pela Universidade de Indiana, mora em Los Angeles, Califórnia.

COLLAPSE: WHEN BOUNDARIES, MARGINS AND CATEGORIES FALL 

Collapse examines the environments of the art world as boundaries, margins and categories are no longer relevant. With the inclusion in the commodification and capitalization of art by artists who historically were seen as outsiders and outliers, the art world is exploding the formal rigidity of the canon. Interested in liminality, I explore the spaces where visual language defies categorization largely by artists of color and women whose work contains the narrative symbology of double consciousness and intersectionality – of looking and knowing from multiple perspectives. Collapse also considers what communities would look like if we allow for the disintegration of boundaries between the art world and the lived experience of quotidian life. What happens when institutions no longer have the power to validate art and art is consumed by people and in service of communal good. How will things change, what effects will be discernible when people use visual literacy in their everyday lives, employing intersectional approaches to interactions, mobilities, as well as political and social agency.  


jill moniz’s interests focus on building understanding, creativity 
and inclusivity through the arts. She worked in community engagement at Museum of Latin American Art before becoming head curator at the California African American Museum in 2006. Then, moniz served as curator to Dr. Leon O Banks, a founding trustee of MOCA, before returning in 2013 to large-scale exhibitions in museums and galleries around the world. In 2016, she founded Quotidian, a curatorial investigative space supporting local artists and building visual literacy. Dr. moniz serves as an advisor for community engagement and programming for the Getty Center, and sits on advisory boards throughout the state. She holds a doctorate in cultural anthropology from Indiana University and lives in Los Angeles, California.
