Enquanto a ligação indexante à realidade que abordam garante ao som e à imagem uma credibilidade especifica, a postura do artista, a sua escolha estética, temática e política, bem como a posição autorreflexiva, podem gerar uma avaliação critica sobre a constituição dessa realidade. É neste ponto que a arte encontra a filosofia. A reflexão sobre a relação entre o mundo factual e a sua apropriação subjetiva, questionando as reivindicações hegemónicas de objectividade e autoridade e problematizando as contradições inerentes à sociedade, são, por imanência, questões filosóficas. Problematizar a realidade – encontros entre arte, cinema e filosofia é um conjunto de programas que decorre de uma parceria entre IFILNOVA (CineLab) / FCSH / UNL, Goethe-Institut Portugal e Maumaus / Lumiar Cité e em colaboração com Apordoc / Doc’s Kingdom. Estes encontros internacionais entre artistas e investigadores focam-se no momento em que a arte, o cinema e a filosofia se entrelaçam num diálogo produtivo. No sétimo e último programa desta série de conversas e projeção de filmes acontece o encontro entre a artista plástica Judith Barry e o filósofo Giovanbattista Tusa, acompanhado pela projeção de Die Sehnsucht der Veronika Voss (A Saudade de Veronika Voss, 1982), da autoria de Rainer Werner Fassbinder. Terceiro capítulo da sua trilogia sobre o pós-guerra na República Federal da Alemanha, juntamente com Die Ehe der Maria Braun (O Casamento de Maria Braun, 1978) e Lola (1981), o filme acompanha a história de uma antiga diva do cinema que recusa encarar o facto de a sua celebridade ter desaparecido com o fim do governo de Hitler. Caindo no esquecimento e negando ter sido a face do regime nazi, continua a agir de modo amaneirado, enquanto mergulha na toxicodependência e é vítima de um psiquiatra manipulador e mercantilista. Através de uma estética que lembra o film noir norte-americano, Veronika Voss sugere os complexos envolvimentos entre a história individual e coletiva, a realidade e a sua estilização cinematográfica, a brutalidade da indústria do cinema e a máquina de sonhos que representa. Judith Barry (EUA) é artista plástica e ensaísta. O seu trabalho combina uma série de disciplinas, incluindo instalação / projetos de investigação, arquitetura / design de exposições, cinema / vídeo, performance / dança, escultura, fotografia e meios digitais. A sua obra foi apresentada internacionalmente, incluindo nos seguintes eventos: Berlin Biennale, Venice Biennale(s) of Art/Architecture, Sharjah Biennial, Bienal de S. Paulo, Nagoya Biennale, Carnegie International, Whitney Biennale, Sydney Biennale e documenta. As suas publicações incluem: “Body without Limits” (2009), “The Study for the Mirror and Garden” (2003), “Projections: mise en abyme” (1997) e “Public Fantasy” (1991). Atualmente, desempenha o cargo de Diretora do ACT-MIT Program in Art, Culture and Technology (Cambridge, Massachusetts). Giovanbattista Tusa (Itália) vive e trabalha em Lisboa como filósofo e investigador de media, sendo investigador em Filosofia e Ecologia no Instituto de Filosofia da Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas da Universidade Nova de Lisboa (IFILNOVA). Em 2017, em França, publicou em coautoria com Alain Badiou “De la fin”, atualmente a ser traduzido para inglês, português e espanhol. A sua pesquisa multidisciplinar abrange os campos da política radical, arte, cinema, ecocrítica, realismo ontológico, estudos animais e práticas contemporâneas. While their indexical link to the reality they address grants images and sounds a specific credibility, the position of the artist, her aesthetic, thematic and political choices and self-reflexive stance, may generate a critical assessment of the very constitution of reality. At such a point, art meets philosophy. In order to reflect on the relationship between the factual world and its subjective appropriation, questioning hegemonic claims to objectivity and problematising the inherent contradictions of society are inherently philosophical issues. Problematising reality – Encounters between art, cinema and philosophy is a series of screenings and discussions, in a partnership between IFILNOVA (CineLab) / FCSH / UNL, Goethe-Institut and Maumaus / Lumiar Cité and in collaboration with Apordoc / Doc’s Kingdom. These encounters between artists and researchers of international renown focus on the very moments where art, cinema and philosophy enter into a productive dialogue. The seventh and last edition of this series of conversations and screenings brings together the New York-based artist Judith Barry and the philosopher Giovanbattista Tusa, who will discuss Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s feature film Veronika Voss (Die Sehnsucht der Veronika Voss, 1982), the third episode of Fassbinder’s trilogy on Post-War West Germany, following after The Marriage of Maria Braun (1978) and Lola (1981). Veronika Voss tells the story of a once celebrated film diva unable to face the fact that her fame has faded away since the end of Hitler reign. Fallen into oblivion and denying the reality of which she was ‘the face’ – the Nazi-regime – she continues acting in a highly mannered way, drifts into drug addiction, and falls prey to a totally manipulative business-minded psychiatrist. Through an aesthetics reminiscent of American film noir, Veronika Voss captures the complex entanglements of collective and individual history, reality and its cinematic stylisation, the rough film business and the dream machine it represents. Judith Barry (USA) is an artist and writer whose work combines a number of disciplines including installation and project-based research, architecture/exhibition design, film/video, performance art/dance, sculpture, photography, and digital media. She has exhibited internationally at such platforms as the Berlin Biennale, Venice Biennale(s) of Art/Architecture, Sharjah Biennial, Sao Paolo Biennale, Nagoya Biennale, Carnegie International, Whitney Biennale, Sydney Biennale, and Documenta, among others. Her publications include Body without Limits (2009), The Study for the Mirror and Garden (2003), Projections: mise en abyme (1997), and Public Fantasy (1991). Currently she is Director of ACT – the MIT Program in Art, Culture and Technology (Cambridge, MA). Giovanbattista Tusa (Italy) is a philosopher and media researcher based in Lisbon, where he is currently a Researcher in Philosophy and Ecology at the Nova Institute of Philosophy (IFILNOVA), Universidade Nova de Lisboa. His latest work, De la Fin, co-authored with Alain Badiou, was published in France in 2017 and is currently under translation in English, Brazilian Portuguese and Spanish. His current multidisciplinary research examines radical politics, art, cinema, eco-criticism, ontological realism and animal studies, and contemporary practices.
