(PT) Various cycles under the Sun Mikko Rikala 15.03.19 – 04.05.19 Inauguração 19h – 22h, 15.03.19 A 3+1 Arte Contemporânea tem o prazer de apresentar a exposição Various cycles under the Sun do artista finlandês Mikko Rikala (Tampere, 1977). Mikko Rikala faz parte da mais recente geração de fotógrafos que integram a prestigiosa Escola de Helsínquia. Marcadas por uma intensa consciência estética, as obras fotográficas da Escola de Helsínquia assentam numa abordagem conceptual que é, embora de temas variados variada, incontestavelmente finlandêsa, como os próprios referem. Na sua primeira exposição individual em Portugal, o artista irá mostrar uma selecção de fotografias que dão continuidade às suas reflexões epistemológicas em torno do ‘ver’ e do ‘percepcionar’. O artista questiona “Quais são as possibilidades do Homem de observar e compreender o mundo para além do racional?”. As ligações ao conceptualismo e ao minimalismo fornecem aqui uma estrutura para as ideias e escolhas estéticas. Por sua vez, a influência da cultura finlandêsa destaca-se na encenação das paisagens desabitadas e na representação da natureza, aludindo à isolação nórdica. O título da exposição refere-se à obra Eight days under the Sun (14.07–21.07.2018), 2018, onde é revelada a marca circular deixada por uma rocha num papel azul após oito dias de exposição solar. Various cycles under the Sun invoca alguns dos temas recorrentes em toda a obra de Rikala - a passagem do tempo e os seus fenómenos transformativos, desde a deterioração à autorrenovação. Os ciclos e os círculos são elementos constantes que se manifestam nas imagens de Rikala tanto nas suas formas físicas como metafóricas. Nas fotografias que compõem a exposição, o tempo torna-se mensurável através de gestos repetitivos e, muitas vezes, o próprio autor assume-se como unidade de medida. Segundo o artista, o exercício da repetição permite-lhe a criação de um espaço meditativo entre o quotidiano e o insólito, onde é possível um vislumbre do transcendente. O alvo da prática artística de Mikko Rikala é, portanto, esta mesma transcendência dos limites do intelecto humano. Mikko Rikala (Tampere, 1977) vive e trabalha em Helsínquia, Finlandia. Obteve o seu Mestrado em Fotografia na Aalto University, School of Arts, Design and Architecture, fazendo parte das mais recentes gerações de artistas da Escola de Helsínquia. Em 2010 foi premiado com o EmmaPrize pelo Espoo Museum of Modern Art, Finlândia. É um dos membros do colectivo Maanantai Collective, que em 2013 foi nomeado para o Paris Photo – Aperture Foundation, First PhotoBook Award. Das suas exposições individuais destacam-se: Overlapping Instants, com Juuso Noronkoski, Galería Alarcon Criado, Sevilha, Espanha (2018); Emptiness Ceases to Be Blue, Gallery Rotwand, Zurique, Suíça (2016); 10 Weeks by the Sea, Gallery Bethanien, Berlim, Alemanha (2015); e Towards Nothing, Gallery TAIK Persons, Berlim, Alemanha (2013). Os seus trabalhos fazem parte das colecções Tapiola, Artek, e do Estado da Finlandia, bem como outras colecções privadas internacionais. --- (EN) Various cycles under the Sun Mikko Rikala 15.03.19 – 04.05.19 Opening 19h – 22h, 15.03.19 3+1 Arte Contemporânea has the pleasure of presenting the exhibition Various cycles under the Sun by the Finnish artist Mikko Rikala (Tampere, 1977). Mikko Rikala is part of the latest generation of photographers from the prominent Helsinki School. Marked by an intense aesthetic conscience, the photographic works from The Helsinki School are based on a conceptual approach that, although eclectic in themes, is distinctly Finnish, as they have put it. In his first solo exhibition in Portugal, the artist will show a selection of photographs that extend his epistemological reflections around ‘seeing’ and ‘perceiving’. The artist questions “What are the possibilities of Man to observe and understand the world beyond the rational mind?”. The links to conceptualism and minimalism provides the framework for the ideas and aesthetic choices. On the other hand, the influence of Finnish culture is highlighted in the staging of desolate landscapes as well as in the representation of nature, alluding the Nordic isolation. The title of the show refers to the artwork Eight days under the Sun (14.07–21.07.2018), 2018, where the circular mark left by a stone after eight days of sun exposure is revealed on a blue paper. Various cycles under the Sun invokes some of the recurrent themes throughout Rikala’s work – the passing of time and its transformative phenomena, from decay to self-renewal. Cycles and circles are constant motifs that manifest themselves in the artist’s imagery in both their physical and metaphorical forms. In the photographs that compose the exhibition, time becomes measurable through repeated actions, and the author himself often becomes a unit of measurement. According to the artist, the exercise of repetition allows for a meditative space between the mundane and the unthinkable, where a glimpse of the transcendental is possible. The purpose of Mikko Rikala’s artistic practice is, therefore, the transcending of the limits of human intellect. Mikko Rikala (Tampere, 1977) lives and works in Helsinki, Finland. He received and MA in Photography from Aalto University, School of Arts, Design and Architecture, becoming part of the newest generation of artists to form The Helsinki School.
