Textos de Isabel Macieira …. pressente-se que, ao longo das várias épocas, há na pequena e requintada cidade de Tavira uma clientela que se revê no que mais de moderno se faz (e referimo-nos aqui à arquitetura) e que adere “de imediato” às novas correntes estilísticas. Assim acontece também durante as décadas de 50 e 60 do século XX, em que a arquitectura modernista se expressa em emblemáticos exemplares ainda visíveis na cidade e seus arredores, de grande beleza e particular interesse e que urge estudar, inventariar e preservar na sua integridade, importantes testemunhos que são da arquitetura deste século na cidade. Nesta exposição fotográfica integram-se alguns dos exemplares mais marcantes, muitos dos quais da mão do arquitecto Manuel Gomes da Costa, hoje um dos nomes inquestionáveis da arquitectura modernista no Algarve. Esta mostra não pretende no entanto e apesar do imenso merecimento deste arquitecto de longa vida e obra, homenageá-lo, pretende sim homenagear a cidade de Tavira, o seu património arquitectónico e o valor simbólico que este detém, como testemunho de uma época e de um modo de estar e pensar. Uma vez mais e em paralelo com o que acontece em épocas anteriores, assistimos em meados do século XX ao desenvolvimento de uma manifestação estilística que reflecte a disponibilidade e abertura com que a sociedade tavirense acolhe este novo estilo depurado, geométrico e moderno, onde a beleza estética é fruto, tal como no passado, sobretudo das clássicas relações de proporção. Estas construções, que se espalham por ambas as margens do Gilão e se prolongam por algumas das localidades mais próximas, assumem agora as possibilidades dadas pelos novos e emergentes materiais e processos construtivos, como o betão armado, a que se juntam elementos de uma gramática decorativa moderna, como os tubos, chapas e caixilharias metálicas, as lâminas verticais ou horizontais de betão ou metal, os revestimentos com painéis de azulejo (aqui muitas vezes de “sabor regional”), a pastilha vítrea, o tijolo de vidro ou vazado e ainda alguns elementos carismáticos da arquitectura da cidade, como a reixa ou os tabuados de madeira, sobretudo em protecções de sombra. Quando hoje percorremos a cidade e nos deparamos com estes edifícios conseguimos ainda perceber a amplitude e expressão simbólica que este movimento deteve em meados do século passado nesta cidade. Neste conjunto muitos são no entanto, os que se encontram em mau estado de conservação ou mesmo em perigo de destruição por parecerem “feios”, obsoletos e sem qualquer interesse patrimonial… Daí o interesse e razão deste projecto que nasce com o intuito de apelar para o reconhecimento, reabilitação e classificação como de interesse público, de todo este conjunto de edificados. Isabel Macieira, Fevereiro de 2019 …. there is a general feeling that, at various times, there have always been people in the small and quaint town of Tavira, who have been attracted to the modernity in each time, and have “immediately” joined and praised the new stylistic trends. The same happened during the 1950s and 60s, a period when modernist architecture was represented by a number of emblematic buildings in the city and its surroundings, buildings that have a great beauty and particular interest, making it urgent to study, catalogue and preserve the integrity of these examples as important witnesses of the city's 20 th century architecture. In this photo exhibition one can see some of the most striking examples, many of which were created by the architect Manuel Gomes da Costa, an indisputed name in the modern architecture of the Algarve. However, this exhibition is not intended to honour this architect himself, despite the immense merit of his long working life. It aims to honour the city of Tavira, its architectural heritage and the symbolic value it holds, as a testament to a time and a way of being and thinking. Once again, and in parallel with what happened in previous times, we witnessed in the mid-twentieth century the development of a stylistic manifestation that reflected the openness and availability with which the (high) society of Tavira embraced this new style, refined, geometric and modern, where aesthetic beauty is, above all, a consequence of the classical relations of proportion, as it was in the past. These buildings, which can be found along both banks of the Gilão river and also in some of the nearby villages, display the possibilities provided by new and emerging materials and building processes, such as reinforced concrete, joined by elements of a modern decorative grammar such as pipes, metal sheets and metal window frames, vertical or horizontal concrete or metal slabs, tile panelling (here often with a so-called "regional flavour") vitreous glass mosaic, glass or hollow brick, and some charismatic elements of the architecture of the city, such as a trellis or shutters made of wood, especially to provide protective shade. When we go through the city nowadays and we come across these buildings (many of which are in a poor state of conservation and where some elements have already been covered or are in danger of being destroyed because they look ugly and obsolete), we can still perceive the amplitude and symbolic expression which this movement halted in the middle of the last century in the city. This refined and balanced architecture, where the formal and functional principles are always present, arrives here by the hands of Manuel Gomes da Costa and conquers the taste of a part of the Tavira clientele, especially private, continuing to express itself for at least two more decades. Hence, from our point of view, the interest and reason for the recognition, rehabilitation and classification of this heritage as of public interest, bringing to the light and adding to the current history of the city plus this period of important affirmation of its modernity.
