[for English please scroll down] 15.12 | Sábado | 16h00 Inauguração 15.12 | Sábado | 17h16 Civil Twilight Em Setembro de 2018, na sua primeira visita a Lisboa, Gerry Bibby foi o último artista a ser alojado no apartamento do Programa Internacional de Residências da Maumaus, localizado no Campo dos Mártires da Pátria. Bibby é também o primeiro artista a residir na localização provisória do Programa, na Rua dos Anjos. Baseando-se no interesse por aquilo que foi designado de “literaturas menores”, em PUBLIC, a sua primeira exposição individual em Portugal, o artista desenvolve um conjunto de esculturas pertencentes a uma série em curso e a novos trabalhos que reagem ao espaço e ao contexto da temporada que passou em Lisboa: 1. Recordando uma anedota mais que célebre sobre um arquiteto modernista e a inquietação do seu cliente com as consequências da encomenda na sua vida privada, PUBLIC reanima a interação que tanto sofrimento causou ao cliente, nomeadamente a oposição binária entre interior e exterior, público e privado. Algum cinema soube explorar as pressões psíquicas que a fachada de vidro herdou deste tipo de histórias. 'Acredite, eu conseguia entendê-la, de dezembro a janeiro e mesmo depois, não era só a época mais fria do ano, era também a mais escura, e, quando a noite caía, o interior iluminado tocava o exterior invisível, desdobrando-se em reflexos'. 2. A fachada da loja (galeria) comunica com a rua através de linguagens próprias do comércio, ecoando uma perversão que estas dinâmicas atualmente reencenam. Se bem que atrás das faces de vidro dos nossos dispositivos, o PÚBLICO surge saturado de elementos pessoais: entre listas de compras e inventários de comportamentos privados, entretecem-se as linguagens do comércio e do desejo. 'Destroçado podia ver o meu próprio mal-estar a destacar-se. Não queria dramas incitados por revelações, era antes testemunha de incerteza e mudança com que conseguia sentir empatia'. 3. Entretanto, permanecem as fisicalidades das arquiteturas e dos objetos, prontas a ser reclamadas por quem tenha a vontade ou o capital. As iniquidades em escala e em oportunidades produzem os antagonismos e as alianças que se manifestam em PUBLIC. 'Não sabia bem por onde começar. Pareceu-me que as crises ocorriam nos planos mais fundamentais da sustentação e do espaço, crescendo em espiral, e foi aí que comecei, numa tentativa de exercer controlo'. Sem querer simplesmente reiterar o sintomático, independentemente da posição a partir da qual o consideramos, PUBLIC é uma arena de contestação e de contradição. Gerry Bibby vive e trabalha em Berlim. Bibby é autor da publicação “The Drumhead” (Sternberg Press, Berlim, 2014) e colaborador da revista de arte “Starship” (Berlim), coeditada com Nikola Dietrich, Martin Ebner, Ariane Müller e Henrik Olesen. He is also the first to reside in its provisional location on Rua dos Anjos. With his interest in what has been coined ‘minor literatures’, for his first solo exhibition in Portugal, PUBLIC includes sculptures from an ongoing series, and new works responding to the space and context of his time here: 1. Recalling a probably over-used anecdote about a modernist architect and his client's disquiet with the work's subsequent implications on her private life, PUBLIC further agitates the interface that caused the client so much distress, the binary opposition of inside/outside, public/private. Some cinema has taken advantage of the psychic pressures the glass facade has inherited from such anecdotes. 'Believe me, I could understand her, December into January & even further wasn’t only the coldest time of year, it was the darkest, and when night fell the lit interior played beacon for the unseen exterior, all the while redoubling itself in reflections'. 2. A (gallery) shop front addresses the street with languages known from commerce, and echoes a perversion that these dynamics play out today, where, albeit from behind the glass interfaces of our devices, the PUBLIC is saturated with the personal: from shopping lists to the inventories of private behaviours, languages of commerce and desire intermingle. 'Piled up, I could see my own discomforts in relief. I didn’t want to play into dramas fuelled by disclosure, but I was witness to and could empathise with uncertainty and change'. 3. All the while the physicalities of architectures and objects stand by, ready to be enlisted by whomever is willing or has the capital with which to engage them. Inequities in scale and opportunity produce antagonisms and alliances that play out in PUBLIC. 'I wasn’t quite sure where to begin. It seemed to me that crises were taking place at the very base levels of sustenance and space, spiralling outward, and so, in an attempt to get a grip, that’s where I began'. Without wanting to simply reiterate the symptomatic, from whichever position we begin to consider it, the PUBLIC is an arena of contestation and contradiction. Gerry Bibby lives and works in Berlin.
