Pascal Niggenkemper

PASCAL NIGGENKEMPER :
Described by the New York City Jazz Records as "one of the most adventurous bassists on the scene” and by the Chicago Reader “genius for sound exploration” Franco-German bassist and composer Pascal Niggenkemper creates music bluring the lines between improvised, pure sound, and experimental music with a distinct language infused with new bass techniques.

Thanks to a prepared double bass (pliers, gongs, tambourine, unconventional bow, piezo), the source of an entire vocabulary of innovative sounds, and a special sense of touch, Pascal Niggenkemper is one of the main architects of the “new renewal” of the language of this instrument. The concept of polyphony guides his approach, which consists of fashioning each piece from the sound data emitted by his instrument.
Along the way, he formed ‘beat the odds’ a quartet for two cellos and two contrabasses whose strings are hit by a lever (sort of propeller) and the double trio 'le 7ème continent’ working off the thematic of the floating garbage in the oceans.

Ricardo Jacinto

Based in Lisbon, Ricardo Jacinto has been building in articulation with his activity as a visual and sound artist, a career as a cellist with regular activity in the field of improvised and experimental music. Marked by an approach of meticulous exploration around the timbre potentialities of the instrument and its relation to specific sites, in the last four years, he has performed solo with a customized amplification and spatialization system for his cello (Medusa) with which he has developed a vocabulary based on the perceptual fragmentation and dispersion of the sonic gestures.

He collaborates regularly with saxophonist Nuno Torres in Cacto and is a member of The Selva (w/ Gonçalo Almeida and Nuno Morão), Harmonies (w/ Joana Gama and Luis Fernandes), Phonopticon (w/ Gustavo Costa, Henrique Fernandes e José Alberto Gomes), Beat The Odds (w/ Pascal Niggenkemper, Elisabeth Codoux and Felicie Bazelaire), Norberto Lobo Quarteto (w/ Yaw Tembe and Marco Franco) and LISBON FREEDOM UNIT (Dir. Luis Lopes). Numerous collaborations with other musicians include: C Spencer Yeh, David Maranha, Jean Luc-Guionnet, Helena Espvall, Manuel Mota, @C, Red Trio, Angélica Salvi, Ernesto Rodrigues, Susana Santos Silva, Rodrigo Pinheiro or Shiori Usui. He presented his work in concerts, exhibitions and performances all over Europe. His music is edited by Clean Feed, Creative Sources and Shhpuma Records. He is currently a researcher at the Sonic Arts Research Center at Queen's University in Belfast.
