FREE ADMISSION Exhibition Religious vestments / Ecumenical designs 9h30-12h30 / 15h30-17h30 Vestry, Igreja de São Roque Until October 28 In liturgy, vestments are an important sign of how religious communities understand the sacred. Not through deference to the vestments themselves, but through deference to what they reveal: that the sacred may be revealed to humankind. This is the power of the symbol - and specifically, of the liturgical symbol. Different liturgical apparel can express authority, reverence, dignity or continuity with the tradition to which the community belongs. Learning to look at the attire of a religious community is to learn to look at what that community says about the sacred. This exhibition presents the public with vestments habitually used in prayer. The liturgical apparel on display is drawn from different faiths: the Jewish Community of Lisbon, the Hindu Community of Portugal, the Philippine Catholic Community, the Islamic Community of Lisbon, the Sikh Community of Portugal, the Romanian Orthodox Church in Lisbon, the Ucranian Byzantine Rite Catholic Community, the Lisbon Dojo Zen Ryumonji and Igreja de São Roque.
